A better alternative to Oracle VM is QEMU or KVM because it goes right to the kernel getting more performnace!

When using Wine on a dual drive, dual boot Windows / Linux system, will Wine write to the C: drive or does it keep everything on the Linux drive and file system? An in depth and current wine tutorial would be great, installing and uninstalling, configuration, etc. Right click no longer has Open with Wine... as an option.

Is there any specific reason why you advise VirtualBox, a type 2 Hypervisor? May there be less issues with I/O using a Type 1 Hypervisor? And why not the Linux built-in KVM?

I love that storage has become so cheap, fast, and small. I've used the Drive Swap Dual Boot method for over a decade, via an IcyDock four bay enclosure. It's really cool to use SSDs now much in the way I used floppies in the 80s. :)

Thank you, Mr. Barnatt. 🙏🏼 I'm thrilled to know that all those options exist, and very impressed by Linux' flexibility in particular. I have it in mind to maintain separate, dedicated Windows and Linux platforms (I have desk space for each, and more than enough components lying around to build the latter), but the ability to set up *virtual machines* in Linux is simply brilliant. Quite a 'Nice to Have' option in case I ever need it. _On to the next video!_ 👍🏼

Rightly or wrongly, I don't trust MS with my data. I use Windows 10 for Word, Excel and Powerpoint and I have quite an investment in a Word macro package for quickly creating professional looking documents. I use Linux for all my other computing needs. What I would like to do is setup a Windows 10 box in VirtualBox as a kind of sandbox. No telemetry, no updates, no way in for MS. Is this possible?

Thank you for the video, very informative and helpful for Linux Mint, I think a lot of people will have to change to Linux due to Microsoft corporate greed, or like me that started with Dos 6 many years ago. I am lucky as my Lenovo T430 has two drives, so I can dual boot W10 or Linux Mint, but I am finding myself in LM most of the time and transferred my pictures and documents across to LM.

Thanks for this, another informative and useful video. But I'm somewhat surprised that you do not even mention the QEMU/KVM path to virtual machines on Linux. As you undoubtedly know, this support is built into the Linux kernel and (I believe) has some performance advantages over the VirtualBox solution. I've tried both, and good old Windows 7 certainly does seem to run a bit faster under KVM than it did under VirtualBox. That's just a perception though, not based on running any benchmarks or anything.

In my limited experience with Wine I'd say older & very simple programs seem to work best. I am not a gamer so can't comment about games. More complicated programs may seem to work perfectly initially then something will break & they are not worth bothering with. However, give each program a try & see what happens because I have had some nice surprises with Wine. It is worth the trial and error because often the linux equivalents are ugly & poor quality.

I guess I am wondering how you manage your Windows license when you run windows virtually. I would think at some point, Windows would complain about not having a valid license. What is this point? When do you actually need to purchase a Windows license?

Zorin Core OS if free. Use WPS office which is close to MS Office in terms of basic functions and layout.

A sortable page of links or a downloadable spreadsheet would be real handy, but then that's more work for you. I love your presentations and am having fun with Raspberry Pi's and Linux Mint. THANKS!

These briefing type "Overviews" of current (And near future) possibilities are just-the-job for those who haven't got the time or inclination to be fully immersed - the alternative is wading through masses of marketing sponsored "punt" articles. I would echo your comments about dual booting in particular relation to the use of Bitlocker with Windows. You have to be very careful with the use of Bitlocker, which IMHO is still not a fully robust technology when used in the dual boot environment, even when you're only dual booting two different versions of Windows

-- As little Microsoft as possible, but better that than Google anything. -- For a future episode, dear Chris, it may be helpful to do a Linux distro lineage overview. One of the nice things about the plethora of distributions is that while one over another may be better tailored to one's particular preferred use, distro branches are often able to grab things from their legacy distro's repository without compatibility problems.

I give the Virtual Machines always all CPU Cores and threads, since I see no advantage in slowing down the VM artificially. The Linux scheduler is perfectly capable of handling all VM processes of all VMs and all Host OS processes at the same time effectively.
