If the bear is looking to eat you, it will attempt to. Your best bet is lasting long enough for help to arrive or the bear becomes disinterested. 2) Typically Grizzly/Brown bears will attack you because they feel threatened. While Brown/Grizzly bears can eat you for food it's typically if it's late in the season before hibernation and they didn't eat enough - generally areas are restricted by rangers. Black bears actually will attack you for food. With black bears it's best to stand big/tall and make a lot of noise and equip yourself with something. That said, if the black bear is hungry and determined, that's not going to end well so revert back to playing dead. 3) If you have bear spray, know how to use it. There are safety levers/latches on it that you cannot fumble around with as a bear can cover 30 feet in 5 seconds. 4) Bears can out-run and out-swim you... they move fast uphill/down and can reach up to 35MPH... you're not running away. They can also swim faster and swim for MILES easily. Climbing a tree may work but black bears are VERY adept climbers, that wont work.
