Dont waste time with WAFU its an imperceptible joke that takes an hour to do 5 seconds of footage and literally upscales the bad quality leaving you with a faulty GPU it cost me 2 days of work figuring out why my separate video editor wont export 3 days of hard work, I nearly gave up entirely, I thought Norad was in on the conspiracy and as a last ditch I unticked "use GPU render" and the damn thing exported my video and Im certain it has to do with that WAIFU piece of crap I downloaded which asked me to change a GPU setting. I have had a harrowing 2 days.

If you had used "3d ultra quality" on waifu2x You might've got better video upscale than avc.

The product AVCLabs makes looks fake. I can tell it's an AI enhanced Video. The others not so much, and Topaz retained the most realism.

These are nice but I see a VERY LONG render processing times for most PCs as any video not extremely short could take days to render.

I know we are all after video processing, I have never done it, nevertheless, I see the use for it ...totally great. But let us not forget: this butterfly is not a "red admiral" or "admiral" etc. it is a Peacock Butterfly, Inachis io. If we decide to be very precise about one subject, namely, video processing, I cannot see why another subject area should be treated "wishy washy" or "good enough", No I want Precision all around.

Thank you for the comparison :) Something I would be interested to see is how Waifu2x-Extension-GUI would fare in this comparison if it were set to the "3D Real-life - Enlarge only - Highest Quality(Slow)" preset. This comparison feels a little bit unfair to me since (and I do not understand why) AVCLabs is set to the 'Ultra' Quality setting but for Waifu2x-Extension-GUI the lowest quality preset (fast) gets chosen for the comparison. I know it would use the Real-ESRGAN Engine in the Highest Quality Preset but am not sure which one gets chosen in the Fast Preset, would need to check later.

I think AVCLabs is the worst looking one. Look at the antennae and the reflections on the wings. The background is also completely broken. Too aggressive. Waifu2x was the best by far, then Topaz and AVCLabs dead last.

I think after 8K which is called Full Ultra HD (jeez they keep coming up with rediculous names), there will be Extreme HD, where a pixel is so small where you can't even see it with the eye against the screen. I feel that anything above 4K really is overkill, except maybe in the virtual reality space with very high pixel densities and a lens magnifying them up.

Very nice comparison. It would be worthwhile, although take a lot more time and effort, to take an original video with two different cameras at the same time, one at low res and one at the higher res. Then compare the upscaled low-res video with the original high-res one.

Chris would you please answer a question for me. I have a drone that I fly. I'm shooting at 1980x1020 12 fps The video right off the card looks excellent. Once I loaded up until YouTube it's pixelated. I noticed it mainly when I was flying over treetops. I have been shooting on autofocus. Do you suppose if I put it on manual focus or Infinity it would lessen the pixelation.? Thanks. Keith I just don't understand why it's clear right off the SD card, but once it's in the editor and pushed out on the YouTube as an mp4 I'm always getting this big time pixelation I noticed it mainly on my big screen not so much a phone.

Worth noting that in Topaz, Artimis Low, Medium and High, do not mean the quality of the output, but the quality of the input video. So, for your 360p video you should have used Low or Medium. The difference is notable.

Thank you so much for this video! I tried waifu a while ago and got pretty bad results, so at least this gives me hope that the paid alternatives aren't necessarily much better and that with more tweaking I could do better. I'd like to point out that AVC makes parts of the image look like they're hand-painted, which is very visible in the white spot of the wing. Waifu did that to the video I tried and AVC seems to do it even more.
