According to the biblical Law of repetition , the Word will repeat an something said and an event three times to direct our attention to an important spiritual truth. Three times in Acts ch.2 it is recorded that the men in the crowd asked each other how they were hearing what the believers were saying in their native languages. The spiritual truth is that the believers were speaking in one spiritual language but the men in the crowd were hearing what they were saying in their individual native languages. This event is not only the first evidence of believers recieving the Holy Spirit but a sign to unbelievers, the men in the crowd. Paul wrote that he wished they all spoke in tongues yet only 2-3 were generally allowed to do so in a given "church service". So there must be some other reason and time. He also wrote that he spoke in tongues more than all of them together. When would all of this tongues speaking have taken place? Not nearly enough church time to do so.
