The idea that dopamine is the literal precursor to adrenaline is such a game-changer. It explains why having a goal (dopamine) gives us the energy (adrenaline) to actually move forward. If you're feeling stuck, fix something small in your immediate environment to close that dopaminergic loop. Great advice!

Leaning into the threat where there is more activity makes sense to me as it feels more like the empowerment one feels when one is angry. Now the jumping off a cliff thing is different. I’ve confronted that fear in the form of say a roller coaster…To me that feels more like extreme excitement.

57:30 'Errors are due to state not trait' - what a brilliant thing to articulate. Learning that if we make a mistake, it's because we messed up some trivial, individual thing (due to our emotional / physical / practical state), NOT that we are a 'bad person'.

When I listened to the interview, I felt like listening to ancient Eastern philosophy expressed through modern scientific language. Neuroscience confirms what spiritual traditions like the Shiva Tantra spoke of centuries ago. The prefrontal cortex reflects the Ego, and the insula is the centre of embodied awareness. Very similar to the concept of Lord Shiva through the lens of brain science. Ancient scriptures created these internal maps; modern science confirms this with solid evidence. Interestingly, videos like this are often more accessible and easier to grasp than spiritual texts, which tend to be more symbolic and abstract.

I can vouch for the incredible effect of dorsolateral prefrontal cortex stimulation that Andrew describes at timepoint 0:24:00. My stimulation event was a little misunderstanding in a bar that led to me and another man pulling knives out, followed immediately by bar patrons pulling us apart. Less than a minute later, it was my turn at the pool tables, and since I wasn't going to give up my turn in spite of a near-death experience, I went over to the table. In spite of being a novice, I sank nearly every shot I took and played the best game of pool in my entire life. If anyone wants to try this, it is incredible... but I'd recommend transcranial magnetic stimulation over nearly getting killed in a knife fight.
