Hamamatsu Jo become known as the Castle of Luck/Good Fortune (rough/bad translation?) after Ieyasu rose to success following his time there (a reconstructed version of the castle now stands in its place). Sunpu Jo has a very interesting history, with Ieyasu having been held hostage there, but also returning there after he retired. The last Tokugawa Shogun chose to retire there as well. He was able to take power because every major obstacle or rival, even after besting him, would eventually die to natural causes. He lived long enough that by Sekigahara their were no real significant rivals left alive, indeed the death of the last one (one of the other regents) was the very thing that lead to him making his move to siège power.
