Your history is imprecise. FFT was first published by Lanczos and Danielson in 1942. Tukey and Colley did not know this when they published their own paper, but later gave them full credit. Carl Runge also had this algorithm in 1903.

That FFT is 2 point FFT. Since it you always have a middle point but something time you do not have this structure like 24 points in final you will have a 3 point since it’s 2*2*2*3. Key of FFT is DFT has two type of symmetric structure. Allow you to factor it in to smaller problem (divide and conquer) , you can pad if it small but usually pad is inefficient. In FFT usually 4 point is the best approach. Since unit is 1 -1, i, -i which is can be implemented easily(pure real and pure imag).

Thank you very much for this amazing video! I am confused about a particular detail in the signal digitization explanation. You implied that the non-precise seismograph makes the signal inherently discrete (11:06). The output from the seismograph is, in fact, continuous, until we preferably discretize the signal (ADC) for digital processing by digital computers.

Your example of 8 time domain samples producing 8 frequency bins is 100% correct only if the time samples are complex. Only then is the DFT single sided. The DFT (FFT) is always complex. The example of 8 complex samples is 16 numbers both time and frequency. If the time domain is Real with only 8 useful samples then the DFT will still have 8 complex samples but only 8 can be useful because the samples were real. In this case the DFT is an even function with 4 posited frequencies and 4 negative frequency samples. You explicitly said “complex multiplication” so I’m not disagreeing — only trying to explain that in most situations we have only real numbers as inputs, so the FFT has only half the resolution—that is, N real time samples produces N/2 meaningful frequency bins.

OMG, this video is easier to understand than two lectures I had in college. In my university's digital signal processing course, one chapter is dedicated to the Fourier Transform and Fast Fourier Transform. I found it very difficult to understand and couldn't implement it myself. I only called the library and used it for the final project. It wasn't until I watched this video that I truly understood why it works and why it can be used to extract MFE features for speech processing problems.

I swear Euler, Gauss, Newton, Euclid... Mathematicians don't get enough respect, imho. It shows, among many other things, how influential and necessary intelligence has been in human history. Not for just a few people, but the masses whom the few rely on to accept their contributions with graceful ignorance. I am nearing 40 and recently decided to relearn maths from basic arithmetic to geometry. It's amazing how much more intuitive and how much less mystical it all is when concepts are understood versus simply applying rules. I thank channels like this for piquing my interest enough to re-engage in academia. I am not religious by any means, but bless you all sincerely.
