His views on native rights were more progressive than many of "woke" cancel culture critics that wish to dismantle his legacy for their own perverse self validation. Cook never cared for fame, he never begrudged Banks the credit for the forst voyage and their disagreement that led to Banks not going on the second voyage was not about Cooks ego, well incorrect - it was about Banks's ego and his insistence on turning HMV Endeavour into some sort of hedonistic pleasure ship. I take issue with your counting of the second voyage and Cooks charcter on this voyage. While correct in part it's told without context. The brutality displayed was a consequence of hostility encountered despite Cooks attempts to treat fairly with native cultures due to these cultures becoming less fearful of the English and Cook's ignorance of cultural beliefs in regard to "Spirits" not being meant to return after they have been banqueted and sent off. Cook was of a less tolerant disposition due to illness and pain yet his conviction to peacful and respectful communication never wavered and the assertion that Cook grew and egotistical god complex is completely unfounded and boarders on lible. Most contemporary writings of Cook maintain he was, right until the end humble and "of the common man" and never wavered from his humble Quaker beliefs. Of the hundreds of your videos I've enjoyed, I'm sorry to feel this one completely missed the mark and has suffered from the modern trend of diminishing and shaming anything to do with Britain's Colonial past.>> <<@merkin_muffley says : Thank you for a well-written and narrated mini biography of a man who personified the best and the worst of the British empire.
