Anyone who focuses on Von Braun's Nazi affiliation is just plain ignorant. Oskar Schindler was a member of the Nazi party and had Nazi cohorts, colleagues and affiliates, as did anyone who wanted to succeed in that atmosphere. It doesn't make them complicit.

It has to be noted that judicial standards of a relatively free society do not apply to a totalitarian regime like Nazi Germany. No one could pursue any ambition without party membership. All children were required to be members of the Hitler Youth, a Nazi indoctrination organization. This condition was also present in all communist countries and is certainly present in Red China today. Therefore, it is off-side to judge the intentions of an individual like Werner von Braun, who was under the duress of compliance to a rule of command (as opposed to rule of law) society headed by a brutal dictator.

I just got a large type 1 photo of Von Braun and Walt Disney. Huge Disney history guy and didn’t know who the “other guy” was. Now I know and I am so much more excited about the pic I came across. Fascinating to learn about and he and Walt shared much in common as men/people. Love the complexity of this man’s story - from Nazi rocket scientist to American hero - building weapons of mass destruction to outspoken Christian and civil rights activist. Really interesting man and so happy to know about this all. Great video too!

Simon fails when it comes to Wernher von Braun, but I also find the comments that somehow put it into perspective or try to excuse it as frightening as it is sad. Wernher von Braun was SS Sturmbandfuhrer. That corresponds to a colonel and was not an inconspicuous rank, it had to be worked out and you needed the right support in the SS. It is also a misconception that you had the choice between cooperation and execution. Like many, von Braun could have gone into exile or ceased his activities. But he was a ruthless opportunist. He served the regime. He knew about the processes in Mittelbau Dora and even got actively involved in the organisation. There are reports of inmates seeing him there giving orders. He was also in the Buchenwald concentration camp to select workers. 15,000 people died in Mittelbau Dora and 56,000 people in Buchenwald concentration camp. Von Braun never apologized. In America he is a hero, a country full of people who blindly admire him and justify his crimes, belittle them or simply deny them, a bitter pill for the liberators what their descendants think. Even more bitter for the prisoners and the dead, of course. Funny that we Germans think little of him, places named after him would be renamed and although we know exactly who the Americans owe the rocket technology to, we have to bitterly admit how it was paid for.

As a German scientists in Nazi Germany, he and his colleagues lives likely depended on a fair amount of pragmatism. Life is seldom black and white, with the shades of grey that people live in usually being subject to interpretation.
