The last database worked on had 770 tables with half a million code lines but I am now retired and my home hobby inventory database will probably have 6 tables, 10 at most so this tool should do the job, plus I can give it to friends and they don't need to spend money on anything since Libre runs on everything. Base looks a lot like MS Access which was quite good but terribly poorly used by users who instead preferred to use Excel for every kind of database. I suspect, perhaps, that the reason the interface defaults to one rather than zero for sub-forms is that old database geeks, like me, often have a hidden numeric surrogate key at position 0. I almost never use an identity or a foreign key that is anything other than a generated integer as users have and insufferable tendency to want to change the text of anything that they see on the screen. Again, a great job sir, without going int too much detail.>> <<@ynyslochtyn says : You have shown us how to create a new database creating an .ODB file. If you have an existing .dbf file (the universal gold standard before paradox or access) it can neither connect to or import .dbf files making this database program about as useful as a chocolate teapot? If you want to work with databases, I would suggest lazarus would be much your best bet.>> <<@Randy-m7h8s says : Excellent presentation! Thank you>> <<@MyOtherHead says : I learnt more in this 30 minute tutorial, than the 6-8 hours I spent doing a SQL free online microcredential through a state government vocational college (NSW TAFE), and a few hours more reading about Base in the LibreOffice Docs. It did not at that time imply relationships between tables.>> <<@madametrafficjam8347 says : What if you WANT to be able to add new SOC entries on the form for each entry (or most of them)? How do you make it show up in both tables? I've established a relationship between two tables. Table 1 is book info and has a field for Author. Table 2 is author info and also has a field for Author. Added table 2 as a subform but it's not looking like your version. Instead I've got table 2 added as a miniature table on top of the fields from table 1. Adding information to the author field in table 1 doesn't change anything in table 2 and throws an error because the new value in table 1 has no match in table 2. I've been going slowly crazy with videos and tutorials trying to find a solution to this.>> <<@edwinfarr7301 says : Excellent video!>> <<@Snaerffer says : This is surely the best instructional video on this topic I’ve ver seen. Whist in the attempt to follow the step by step tutorial, I happened to have stumbled upon an issue. However, what I want is a normalized database where data elements are not stored in duplicate/triplicate etc., which your design does with the Processor Type 'SoC' field. Your example links the tables by the text field 'SoC' which gets populated N times (once for every Computer record), making it impossible to change the SoC field text should that ever be desirable. A normalized DB (I'm sure you know this) would use a unique key instead of the value SoC, the key pointing to the text value SoC which could then be changed at will and all affected Computer records would then display the updated value. I haven't yet found out how to do this in a Base form, but I'm sure there is a way. But, you got me started on a good footing, thank you. Update : The listbox can be configured to display a text value from a table and return an index key that gets stored in the file referencing the table. See this link https://ask.libreoffice.org/t/update-record-with-listbox-selection/24056/14>> <<@davidkachel says : Well done, indeed.
