But the problem with Dr. Heiser's reply is that there are NUMEROUS Psalms that talk about God's people being rescued in the day of trouble, God being salvation, deliverer, etc. It doesn't say no trouble, only that God rescues out of said trouble. Nevertheless, if Dr. Heiser says to look at other passages to counterbalance Psalm 91, he is actually making the problem worse for himself, since there are so many related passages that say something similar. And the idea of "God not rescuing in the way we expect" is not exegetically based. David especially was talking about being rescued from death in a very concrete way. The Psalms are a bigger apologetics problem than many would like to admit. Perhaps the deliverance described in the Psalms is mainly eschatological? BTW. Get well soon Dr. Heiser! It was basically “look at context” and read away your faith by “looking for reason” NOT to believe it means what it says. It says he who ABIDES in the shelter.. abides.. not he who said the prayer, or is a professing Christian. He who ABIDES. When the disciples couldn’t cast out the demon, Jesus said it was what they failed to see or failed to believe that was the reason they couldn’t. Let’s not be like that by explaining away faith in his word to protect and preserve us based on experience. We can’t define his word cause aunt Jenny who was a Christian got Covid. Getting into trouble or not. b. God delivering believers from trouble. Dr. Heiser's answer seems only to address point a. For sure, verse 15 says:- "He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him." Certainly the verse says that believers will be in trouble. But the verse also says that God will deliver the believer from trouble. So point a is addressed but not point b. And we have many examples of people claiming that they need not worry about Covid because ... and out come the bible verses. I think the problem with the bible is that it's a book of many books of letters, theologies, myths, histories, poems etc. It was written by many different authors, over many centuries in very different circumstances. Accordingly, it really does say many different things. Unless there is any clear indication otherwise, one person is entitled to treat one set of verses as literal while another treats a very different set of verses as literal. Naturally, conservative and fundamentalist theologians think that the bible is one universal whole and accordingly, they need to explain away inconvenient verses and ideas. However, given that there may have been a few different authors to the Psalms or that the one author may have had different ideas depending on time or circumstance, I think it reasonable to conclude that the author of that Psalm really was thinking in terms of getting into trouble, but God also rescuing him. This kind of thinking is easily seen in the context of warfare. When the Israelis lost a battle, then God was punishing them. When they won a battle, then clearly it was because God had delivered them. Thus, in a modern context, don't worry about Covid. God won't let you get Covid, and should you get it then God won't let you suffer, and should you suffer, then God won't let you die. ^^ That is, you will get into trouble, but the worst won't happen, and should it, then the very worst won't happen. After all, isn't the Psalm also about being delivered from trouble?? ^^^ Naturally, it's reality that shows this kind of thinking to be futile.>> <<@ValerieJean757 says : Matthew 5 46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? It's very short. As usual every morning I was saying my prayers as follows: Christ Jesus, your sacred heart is filled with infinite love and mercy that was broken by our ingratitude and pierced by our sins, yet you loved us still. Accept the consecration that I offer to you of all that I have and all that I am. Take every faculty of my soul and body day by day, nearer and nearer to your Sacred Heart and there I will bear my lessons. Christ Jesus please help me to live a holy life and teach me your holy ways. Abba YHWH please have compassion and mercy upon me and my son. Please deliver me out of this cruel hell and torment that I suffer from the evil deeds of F. Kilgore. Restore my joy and my life with my son for your name sake and for Your Glory. You are far greater than my enemies, spiritual and in the flesh, nothing is impossible for you. I look for you to fulfill Your Divine Promises of redemption and Restoration in my life and in my suffering. In Jesus name I pray, Amen. As I continued to pray mostly repeating the second part of my prayer every morning and crying just overwhelmed with grieving and in unbearable anguish and anxiety, I hear in the mist of my praying in my head the word "Listen"! (It wasn't a gentle whisper). When I stopped praying out loud, I heard the most beautiful chirping. I looked up, outside of my window and on the branches of an allamanda plant that is about eight feet in front of my window, there were three tiny little birds (finches I think) grooming themselves. And just one of the little birds, in between his nipping and grooming and shaking and fluffing his feathers sang the most beautiful song! As I watched it and listened, Holy Spirit said, "Maria felt blessed just to listen at the cascading notes Sweet and Low." This is from one of my most favorite Christmas songs "The Gift" about a gift of a nightingale to Jesus. Then the spirit said, "The Glory of God, Emmanuel God is with you". As I watch this tiny little creature that could fit in the palm of my hand, on the top branches of this allamanda plant that blooms these beautiful pink and purple five petal flowers, I really did feel very very blessed just to listen! It was so beautiful it made me cry even more. The Holy Spirit truly is a comforter and a helper. And the presence of God truly is with his children just like a golden thread through the tapestry of our daily lives; pains, trials and all! God speaks to us in so many different ways. 5 is the number for grace and the color pink signifies a right relationship with God, Purple signifies priesthood. The Glory of God is all around us in the heavens and on the Earth. Lastly I pondered to myself, "I wonder if our Heavenly Father stops what he is doing to listen to our prayers just as I stopped to listen to this tiny bird?" Which made me smile WHILE all along tears rolled down my face.>> <<@jeffgough says : I appreciate Cross Examined and their content - but I think there is a lack of piety on display when you have a picture of Jesus with a crown of thorns in a hammock. First of all God is no respecter of persons and every transgression and disobedience receives a just recompense of reward. That being said, whom God loves he chastens and the punishment can be severe, trials and afflictions, weakness and sickness and even death. Yes, God will kill you that your spirit may be saved in the day of judgement. These things arise because of our disobedience and impenitent hearts. In Luke 13 Jesus told his disciples, Except you repent you shall likewise perish, God is not playing! Further, we endure suffering for the sake of Christ. We enter into his sufferings for if we suffer with him we shall live together with him. Our light affliction works for us a far more and exceeding and eternal weight of glory. These sufferings are not for any wrong we have done, therefore they glorify Christ. As far as Psalm 91, notice these events happen to the world at large. That secret place is in God. It is a very real place, it is a spiritual experience whereby one is enveloped with the presence of God, I am sharing what I know not what I think. And I want to tell it like I know it for his glory! It is the Spirit abiding upon you and not lifting again as with prophesying or the manifestation of the other gifts. Wherefore, Paul said if we walk in the Spirit we will not fulfill the lust of the flesh. But this is for our sanctification. The Psalmist was talking about our preservation by the same Spirit. So while the world endures calamity, we are abiding under God's shadow, in his pavilion. So there is chastisement and the sufferings of Christ and tribulations to the world at large but there is also peace to those whose faith has been tried as gold in the fire. It is a poem about moments when Yahweh chooses in His wisdom to deliver His servant out of trouble. It is in celebration of Yahweh's power and love. It doesn't mean He will always save us from physical harm but the Psalm assures us He is able to and more than able. Like the Three Hebrew Boys before the burning furnace, we must be willing and ready to face unpleasant and dangerous circumstances as humans but especially for our faith as Christians.
