Ok but here's one question: if I shouldn't trust my own mind, why should I trust whatever conclusion my mind produces about the evidence I'm examining? In other words: If by looking at the evidence I come to the conclusion that yes, Christianity is real, why would I trust my own deceptive mind?

Hi I'm having a tough time understanding what evidence means in this context. I've been brought up relying on my personal encounters in Christ and seeing God's work in other peoples lives. I think you make some good points I really need to think about, so I'm wondering if evidence is referring to something like Romans 1:20? "For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse." Or is it historical evidence? Studying apologetics? Or something else?

You've had experiences that you subscribe to the transcendence. But the same feelings can be triggered in a laboratory or in a completely non devine situation. I have had the most strong 'transcendent' feelings while meditating. So yes you are right.those feelings say nothing.. Now you claim that out feelings lie, thus you pretend to know that God doesn't like rock concerts. That is just something.tlu cannot demonstrate. God might inspire people to make Rock music. That's not sin. I was trusting to get some evidence for God. But nothing Just nonsense. Nothing that even comes close to anything that's even remotely.demonstrated truth. So it's just a.claim without any substantiation. Hmmm disappointing.

I believe there is room for both, trusting in experiences and trusting the evidence. Experiences showcase and demonstrate evidence. Evidence bring experience. I would say we should examine our experiences and not dwell on evidence. Experiences are ingrained in the memory of people, they shape who we are and what we believe. Evidence is what product of experiences brings. Evidence can come from thinking and learning and studying, and experience is action based. But technically they are one and the same, and have the same value, and same results.

I belive in both evidential apologetics .and presuppositional apologetics. You cant only rely on evidence.. very smart people will try to tell you virgins dont give birth, and men dont rise from the dead , tehy will tell yoi men dont walk on water or feed 5000 with a few loves and fish. You have to have faith despite there being no evidence that people can rise from the dead. The evidence is wonderful but if you only rely on evidence there will be so many things you wont belive untill you can prove them with evidence. There is enough evidrnce to show you that Christ is who he is.. but we must have faith to belive those things of which there is no evidence. Intellictual assent is not enough.

<<@nothingbutthetruth613

You are forgetting one very important reason why experiences are not enough...not even close. Every religion that ever existed and that exists today has the same amount of people all saying they have experienced the same spiritual moment confirming that only their religion is true. I have some news for you. Only one belief system can be right but they are all populated by those who will claim the exact same thing that their religion is true because of their spiritual experiences. In other words, having something happen to you that seems to confirm your religion is worth absolutely nothing if you have no evidence what you actually believe is true. The experiences you have are obviously worthless. Now that it's clear a transcendental experience means nothing, you will obviously agree that you NEED evidence and since there is absolutely no evidence to anything in Christianity, we've got a slight problem here, don't you think?

If there are feeling but no reality then you have delusion, if you have reality but no feelings then you have no heart, no conviction, you have nothing. It is when reality and conviction come together that there is transformation. Yes look for the evidence but also consider its implications let the heart consider and weigh its significance.

This is a super important video explaining my testimony in Christ to me about evidence vs. experience. Saul become Paul had duel conversion he saw and heard Christ on the road to Damascus. Paul's experience of seeing Christ reinforced his knowledge of Christ. Saul believed he was acting for good on God's behalf by persecuting, imprisoning, and killing Christians. Saul had a conviction of God before he become Christian from his experience of seeing Christ on the road to Damascus.

Experience I believe is necessary for some but not to others. That's why Jesus said "Blessed those who have not seen and yet still believed." We must understand that the Gospel was spread out through the miracles Jesus and the disciples were performing and so people believed. I became a Christian through some pretty vivid experiences which confirmed to me that everything in the Bible is true. But of course, scripture is what has supported my experiences as evidence.

I absolutely dislike this kind of "Christian" teaching. It's highly unbiblical because encountering Jesus IS an experience. This confuses people & can actually do a lot more harm than good. We need to have wisdom & discernment. Countless examples in the Bible where people had experiences with the Lord, from the old testament to the new. If they hadn't trusted those experiences, oh Lord! If Paul had said, oh no my experience I had encountering Jesus on the road was just "feelings." We must be careful!!!! These teachings are heretical
>>
<<@DTkinetic
says :
I disagree. While I acknowledge that it's beneficial to have knowledge of scientific evidence that points you to the Lord, this evidence > experience undercuts the life-changing power and testimonies that can change a person through the Holy Spirit. People have been delivered from drugs, suicide, alcohol and depression or have found immense, superior relief from finding Christ. This is just assuming that every new believer goes to a 'concert' and in their excitement becomes a Christian.

You SAY Evidence, but I think that you are confusing the term Evidence, with Dogma. All of the examples that you gave here, were anecdotes. The plural of anecdotes, is NOT evidence. I can tell you this, before Christ I loved AC/DC and Metallica, G n R and Prince, now, that music makes me feel so uncomfortable that I get nauseated when I hear it. It is absolutely horrible. And when I listen to Gaither, I feel Almighty God all around me and I can't get enough. I haven't listened to secular music in years. And hearing God's name taken in vain makes me afraid and hurt. I want to serve Him better every day and before Christ, I didn't even consider Him at all. Paul Washer said that the moment we're saved some things stop immediately and some things gradually cease over time and with great struggle.I believe that. The point is there's evidence for Salvation. We must examine ourselves and look at what the evidence points to.
