This the problem with a Baptist like Frank. The Holy Spirit is just tossed out.

<<@theeternalsbeliever1779

So Frank acknowledges that Paul said that philosophy amounted to vain reasoning, and yet he still tries to use philosophy to somehow argue that there is a difference between "good" philosophy and "bad" philosophy. The fact that ppl actually believe this guy is a theological genius is as comical as it is tragic.

Humans ways and philosopihcal truth can rather bring you further away from God. Reading the Bible with spiritual understanding and God's guidance will bring you closer to God.

<<@Alakay77

Is it possible that the Bible can form someone's philoshophical ideas? I hear so often people imposing philosohpy on the scriptures rather than allowing scripture to speak for itself. I've found that whenever I simply let the texts within the Bible inform each other, it makes the most sense. That being said, I inevitably would impose external philosophical thought onto the scriptures more than I realise.

You cannot have a doctrine of the Trinity without using philosophical language. If the Bible were so clear and self-interpreting, why did it take the Church CENTURIES to finally solidify this doctrine and that of the Incarnation? Faith and reason are allies.

You need to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church guided by the Holy Spirit to assist in interpreting the Bible otherwise you end up with 2000 Protestant denominations all with different and contradicting interpretations of doctrine.

You need the Holy Spirit to interpret the text. Bad philosophy has led to things like Calvinism and Arminianism.

I have read many books over the years. A hundred people could read War and Peace and 95 of them would fully understand and agree with the plot and meaning. Why is it that millions of people have read the bible and yet each person must read it.....with the power of the holy spirit.....to understand it? Seems like it was very poorly written if so many people can't understand it without "magic", Some say that its hard to understand because it was god's words and human's can't understand or comprehend this infinite being. Odd that Jesus was on this earth for over 30 years, yet he never wrote a single word in the bible. Was he illeterate?

“It’s impossible to use no philosophy to interpret the text” As someone who has majored in philosophy, for once I agree with Turek. Everyone is doing philosophy everyday. When you make decisions, you are doing philosophy. When you ponder life, you are doing philosophy. Christianity is a philosophy, as it seeks an expression of wisdom through a relationship with Christ. Salvation, being the correct decision, makes them wise people. Whether people would call this good philosophy or bad philosophy is what philosophy is all about.

You don't interpret the text. It interprets you. It tells you where you are, what you believe, what you need and how you are doing in the journey. If you measure up to the "fruit" you are supposed to be producing and displaying you are okay. If you do not, your life has just been explained.

It depends on what you mean by "philosophy". In a strict sense, no, you do not any philosophy to interpret the scriptures. In a very loose sense, one can say philosophy is required for any kind of learning or thinking, because philosophy in this sense includes things like logic and various principles needed for interpretation and clear thinking in general. It seems to me this clip is mere semantics.

Context is key, the bible has different Genres, we must read it with the motive of the writer and cultural context in mind. Some books like Ecclesiastes could be classified as philosophical in some sense, but it really isn't an issue, philosophy or no philosophy, it doesn't matter. what's important is to understand the intent of the writer. God can use any medium to communicate his word, be it poetry, parables, riddles etc, etc.

When reading the Bible, context proves to be a more useful tool than anything else. Context of the time, people, language, region, specific book, and scripture in its entirety. Context brings clarity and understanding while answering every alleged contradiction and cherry picked word and verse used to accuse God and His wonderful word.

No need to use philosophy to figure out the bible. Sorry, brother Frank. I agree with you on a great many things but not this. It takes the wisdom of God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Philosophy doesn't teach us how to interpret the Bible. We understand how to interpret the Bible because of what God's word says and how it is revealed to us through his Spirit. We didn't somehow figure out how to interpret scripture. That knowledge was given to us divinely by God.
