questions I always wondered when examined Christianity and the Church- What is politics? What makes something political anyways? Why is politics off the table of discussion? Did not Jesus speak to politics in his day?- Luke 20:21-40

Issues that are hot topics are always addressed in the Bible, therefore they SHOULD be discussed by the pulpit. Theres no such thing as a "political" issue, just a political process. And if its in The Word, that means God cares about it, and congregations should have discussions about these things. A pastor who refuses us too cowardly to feed the sheep and is in the wrong profession. Far too many of them should be used cars salesmen instead, their good at smoothing over the truth and telling folks what they want to hear.

We as Bible believing Christians rightfully speak out against the dangers from the political Left, but I’m also convinced that if the political right were to hold majorities in all branches of the government, we won’t suddenly wake up to be run by a godly government, rather a nationalist authoritarian state where Jesus is just a side car. There won’t be American flags flying in heaven.

This is the epitome of the pulpit of Covenant Church in West Lafayette,Indiana.Senior pastor Dave Henderson will not these issues even the time of day by preaching on them.Covenant is an island onto itself & is tone deaf to many of these issues. When marriage is debated in the state legislature or congress Henderson will not give that fact the time of day.The Respect of Marriage Act is a beautiful example..Since that misnamed act got passed & signed into law Henderson will not give it the time of day by preaching on it.He has spent more time out side America the preaching on the Respect For Marriage Act.He still cannot find his voice on the fact that after a U S senator from this state after being re elected went back into the senate & voted for it not once but twice.Gary Bauer suggest people preach on the 1st Anniversary of THe Dobbs Decision. And even though he preaches from a Jewish Bible Henderson has very stubbornly refused to preach on the 75th Anniversary of Israel. This same church totally ignored the fact that a state marriage amendment that should have been put on the November 2014 ballot was being debated in the state legislature in February 2014.

Well said. And many pastors tragically conflate the proclamation of truth with 'politics'. I think cowardice, love of praise, a lack of love for God and his honor, a lack of love for ones neighbors, and fear of conflict and losing members is behind much of it

There's the idea that a church will lose its tax exempt status if the pastor talks politics. We completely forget that a whole range of tax exempt organizations have been preaching politics for a long time, such as Planned Parenthood. Everything in life is political.

The problem with mixing religion with politics is that it tends to become a social issue rather than one rooted in scripture. Racial issues are social issues. They mix into church in a good way when the goal is fighting injustice. Peoples opinions bring about the worst racial prejudices, and opened the door to many of the ills that we see today.

Politics doesn’t belong in the church, the example the apostles provided doesn’t include politics. It includes preaching Christ and Christ only. Not political issues, unless they just happen to cross while preaching Christ.

Ministries should abandon 501c3 status in favor of something like 508c1a. Churches don't need to file to be "exemptions" because they're listed as an Exception. By filing as a 501c3, you unnecessarily submit the ministry to the scrutiny of the government and are actually forfeiting your right to speak on topics that can be deemed "political". Well, you do so at risk of IRS audit and legal fees to drain the organization if they so choose.

I am a little confused on the statement about the church not being meant for unbelievers but for believers. I disagree. We are called to go out and make disciples. If we don’t open up the doors of the church for unbelievers to be welcomed in, then we are failing. It absolutely is for building up believers and being in community. As a pastor you can still teach on the really difficult topics and have a mixed congregation of believers and unbelievers. A pastor just shouldn’t waiver from what the Bible says and avoid certain topics. That’s the real problem.

Christianity is based on the principles of love your neighbor, do unto others, give of yourself for the benefit of others. Aside from what your opinion is about some passages, this is the clear basis. These things are counter to the impulse and wiring of the human. The human has the wiring to love their neighbor and benefit the neighbor when it aligns with the benefit of self. If you want to look throughout history you see this consistently even in so called religious empires. What you see in the West is for the first time in history is the application of Christianity as the law of a land. What you see for the past number of decades is the repudiation of it. You can only spend the inheritance money for so long.

<<@joelarmies

Subjective morality calls into question the value of human life. If there is no real objective value to human life, there is no real reason not to implement the Soviet Union’s ideals in our society. There can be no bedrock reason not to remove the rights of individuals, to harm the individual, or to suppress the freedom of the individual. The West is founded upon Christian principles. The Biblical moral truths of Imago Dei and individual moral responsibility are the on record philosophical basis for the Bill of Rights. To repudiate Christian objective truth, whether or not you believe in it, is of fact repudiating the basis of the entire justice system in the West, including the codification of individual liberties and value. That is why I posit the Soviet Union. As a state philosophically founded on naturalism, the right of the individual had no recognized objective or legal basis. The only legal basis was the state, because it had more power. It was survival of the fittest. Subjective morality is the intellectual opponent to individual rights. Subjective morality is capable of only saying that it supports individual rights. In application it can only support the right of the individual that can enforce their opinion. Since your opinion is, according to subjectivity, only as valuable as mine, and since your feelings are merely as valuable as mine. The only thing needed to nullify your opinion is a counter opinion. Truly the people who hold power win. Perhaps rethinking at least active intellectual repudiation of Christianity, because that is chipping away at the legal foundation to hold an individual opinion.
>>
<<@joelarmies
says :
It is the philosophical untenability of the alternative that shows the truth of objective morality. If all morality is subjective, then morality is an illusion. It is simply genetic memory expressed in chemical impulses that we perceive as emotion. These dictate our social interactions and may help the species survive over time. If morality is a chemical illusion, then those wrong things that you perceive are wrong with all fibers of your knowledge, aren’t really wrong. It calls into question all of your knowledge. If you can’t practically separate chemical illusions from logical decision making as an empath then those who lack empathy are in the enlightened state. And anything that involves emotion should be called into question. Any moral leaning included. If you show love and care to those around you. That shows that your life decisions are impacted by the emotional illusion such as that of love; therefore your practical judgment is questionable. These personal illusory judgments should also not be the basis for laws of a nation. Naturalists say that opinions and feelings should not be used for scientific theories. That is rightly stated. They also should not be used for something many times more practical for every day life, the laws of the nations.

Faith is politics. Not everybody goes to church for the same reasons. People go to church for the community, to find business contacts, a place to drop their kids off, to look for spouses, etc. Many pastors and leaders are focused on nickels and noses and not the truth (if they know it).

I, personally, stay attuned to the political agenda of the day, following the leaders God has put in place and the laws they lay down, as He tells us to, where they do not impede upon HIs laws of loving and worshipping Him and my neighbors with all our hearts, minds and souls. I know in some places it is against the law to feed the homeless and that is against our God's command to love our neighbor and to take care of the widows and the orphans...or those who cannot take care of themselves. I will feed those people even if I would have to go to jail.
