He was happy doing his thing with YouTube, but this is a viable idea. You could put all the resource materials for a whole degree program and read all the resources and watch the lectures as many times as you want, research while you watch the lectures. Note taking used to be scribble because the professor was going to fast. You can comprehensively walk through a degree program at your pace, with academic goals set for you. It is a plausible way to get and education. It would be a tremendous benefit to have an educated citizenry. Conservatives of course are against that. Conservatives have been vilifying not only higher education, but education in general. The conservative attempt to get families to take their kids out of public schools is anti-education. Most home schooled children are taught by people who are unsuited to give their kids an adequate, well rounded education. The purpose of home schooling is not intended to educate but to censor education, and to develop children with a very narrow perspective on life. It's been noticed that highly educated people tend to be liberal. Conservatives hate that. As Donald Trump said, "I love the poorly educated."
