He could have easily done this and walked several English ships into a tangled web where one crew would pretend to lay seige on a town just close enough to a major port that any big guns could and would mobilize, but just far enough that their absence would provide the time to sack their larger port and capture a governor. It is a tragically beautiful story, I know that you are use to presenting the horrors of the Holocaust, but I think it could be interesting for everyone to see how the actions of one person saved so many lives and he kept it a secret for so long.
