Microwaves have a wavelength of about 12 cm in air, but inside water the effective wavelength shrinks to around 1 cm - almost the exact size of a grape. This makes each grape behave like a resonant cavity, trapping and concentrating microwave energy. The microwaves don't escape because they're being amplified inside the grape. When two grape halves - or two grapes touch - their resonances couple. Instead of two separate hotspots, the energy focuses into the tiny gap between them, creating an extremely intense EM field. This hotspot superheats the juice, ionizes sodium and potassium salts and produces a bright plasma flame. Once the hotspot gets hot enough, it strips electrons from atoms in the grape's vapour, creating a glowing mix of ions and electrons - plasma.

incorrect. The microwave oven uses a half wave doubler circuit internally, meaning it only produces microwaves during the positive cycle, at 60hz. (unless maybe this is an inverter overn)

*WRONG!* The electrical explanation is dead wrong. Consumer-type microwave ovens DO NOT send 60 Hz (50 Hz in most of the world) sinewaves to the magnetron. Instead, the incoming mains power goes through a _Half-wave Voltage Doubler_ consisting of a diode and a capacitor. The output power from that is sent to the magnetron EVERY OTHER half-cycle, for 1/120 second if using 60 Hz power and for 1/100 second (10 milliseconds) if using 50 Hz power. At either frequency, the microwaves pulse only ONCE per cycle.
