This makes each grape behave like a resonant cavity, trapping and concentrating microwave energy. The microwaves don't escape because they're being amplified inside the grape. When two grape halves - or two grapes touch - their resonances couple. Instead of two separate hotspots, the energy focuses into the tiny gap between them, creating an extremely intense EM field. This hotspot superheats the juice, ionizes sodium and potassium salts and produces a bright plasma flame. Consumer-type microwave ovens DO NOT send 60 Hz (50 Hz in most of the world) sinewaves to the magnetron. Instead, the incoming mains power goes through a _Half-wave Voltage Doubler_ consisting of a diode and a capacitor. The output power from that is sent to the magnetron EVERY OTHER half-cycle, for 1/120 second if using 60 Hz power and for 1/100 second (10 milliseconds) if using 50 Hz power.
