A modified 1st stage to get us out of the Earth's pull, and ion thrusters go take us to Mars and back (2 years later). It is taking too lonnnnnnnnnnnnng to achieve this goal. My father worked at White Sands Missle Range. A lot of missle/rocket development continues there. I visited the museum at WSMR and White Sands National Park several years ago. Very impressive sites. I grew up to be an engineer of a different sort. SpaceX helps reassure me that our US space program is alive and well. My thanks goes out to Elon, SpaceX, and all people who keep this technology evolving.
