So.. morality is objective, but ambiguous? If we don't know what to do, and as a result a large number of people do what is "objectively" not moral... What is the point of having an objective standard?

Oh dear, Frank. I hope this professor you are talking about doesn't really exist. The task only shows that people have different value systems for determining the worth of someone's life . It shows that human values are subjective. In itself, it cannot prove or disprove an objectively 'right thing' because it does not test for that.

So Frank flips it on its head, claims a moral dilemma where one must decide the least undesirable outcome of many choices, and says that proves objective morality? Sounds like Frank wants to have his cake and eat it too … His reason: “Just because we don’t know the course of action, does not mean morality is relative.” Bravo, Frank …

Moral subjectivity collectively is the basis of moral relativism. Relativism not only recognizes moral subjectivity based on culture, religion and time period, it also suspends judgment, making no one moral position the objective or ‘default’ position. The quandary we find ourselves in with the lifeboat scenario is that we assume that all involved share the same moral objective that life is valuable. It may be safe to assume that each individual considers their own life valuable, but beyond that those values may change radically. In this case the objective (life is valuable) can fall victim to the subjective (self-preservation), though most of us would have a difficult time deliberately choosing to throw someone overboard to save our own skin. So what is the ‘right’ solution to this dilemma? Many of us could probably agree that choosing the hero’s path, and sacrificing ourselves for the sake of the other three would be the noble thing to do, and of the highest moral order. No greater love hath no man, than he should give his life for his friends. Is this not the epitome of moral objectivity? Well, maybe. First we would need a consensus of everyone on the boat. Do they all believe that to be true. Does each one see the other three as persons worth sacrificing themselves for? Maybe they don’t consider the others as friends. Maybe they don’t even know each other, and see each other as a detriment to their continued survival. In an imaginary world, all these higher points of conversation are a luxury, but in the real world of dark, cold shark-infested waters, all the etiquette goes right out the window. However, there is another way of looking at this situation: If God Almighty has already spared their lives from the shipwreck, then it’s possible with His continued protection, the little lifeboat will be enough. The scenario starts out with all four in the boat, so we can assume that a three person lifeboat is capable of holding four people. At least for a little while. History is loaded with people facing insurmountable odds and by some miracle surviving. This scenario doesn’t start on the lifeboat, it starts with them not being killed in the wreck in the first place. Reason would suggest that four people can’t survive on a three man lifeboat. Reason would also suggest that they shouldn’t survive the wreck. But they did. The Lord of Heaven and earth divided the waters above from the waters below, and raised the dry land from its depths. He brought the flood yet spared Noah and his family and the animals on the ark. He split the Red Sea and saved His people Israel. He rescued Jonah from the belly of the great fish. He calmed the storms and walked upon the waters. If the Creator can do all that, He can make that little lifeboat float just as long as He wants to. To me, I think the greatest moral dilemma the world faces right now is a spiritual one. As more and more people denounce any affiliation with matters of a spiritual nature, and specifically with Jesus Christ, it seems like a crisis of faith has become the “New Liberation” with moral objectivity as its main casualty. Throwing off the shackles of religion in general, Christianity has become the main target in the battle between the religious and the secular. For some reason, the chief cornerstone of western civilization is now the most reviled religion in the west. Attitudes and behavior that were unheard of a century ago are now so commonplace no one seems aware that the change is as drastic as it is. There are so many now that find pleasure in rebellion, and cannot even comprehend a time when virtue was the rule instead of the exception. We have left moral objectivity long ago. The moral subjectivity that has been produced over the last sixty years has resulted in no lowest common denominator. We have continued to spiral downward between the guardrails of relativism until even the basic value of life is in disagreement. Science has moved us from the Dark Ages to the Darkness with money and power as the main drivers. With science and technology, we were able to rise up from the barbarism and chaos of the past, only to find social turmoil all around us. As morals declined, so did every aspect of our human existence. Political, religious, social, economic, cultural, educational, agricultural, environmental; without moral objectivity these all have suffered corruption. For this very reason our moral foundations must come from a higher authority than our whimsical humanist philosophies that have produced an endless chorus line of anxieties, disease, depression and despair. We have allowed our morals to devolve to our level of apathy. All it takes for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing. But if good men do nothing, are they really ‘good’ men? Or does their lack of outrage actually encourage more evil? As a young man, I abandoned most of the moral dictates I had been taught, thinking that I was freeing myself from stagnant social norms. I partied like a rockstar, with neither the money or fame to show for it. I indulged all types of debauchery, fueled by drugs and alcohol. But because I hadn’t killed anyone, I fooled myself into believing I was still a ‘good’ person. Subjectively, I wasn’t much worse than most of the people I hung with. Objectively, I was a complete mess, living in utter darkness. And that was when the anxiety hit and the panic attacks took over. To feel guilt or shame because of wrongdoing is a good thing. To live in abject fear because of willful rebelliousness to the truth has convinced me that moral objectivity not only exists, but it will also aid in correction. Small pressures over time, that, if gone unheeded, can become a juggernaut. My past in-discrepancies may seem petty compared to the present darkness that envelops the world today, but I acknowledge them, because I believe that there is room on the lifeboat for anyone willing to except God’s authority over His creation, and the truth of His word. 2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

●Genesis 19 4 But before they retired for the night, all the men of Sodom, young and old, came from all over the city and surrounded the house. 5 They shouted to Lot, “Where are the men who came to spend the night with you? Bring them out to us so we can have sex with them!” 6 So Lot stepped outside to talk to them, shutting the door behind him. 7 “Please, my brothers,” he begged, “don’t do such a wicked thing. 8 Look, I have two virgin daughters. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do with them as you wish. But please, leave these men alone, for they are my guests and are under my protection.” ●Judges 19 22 While they were enjoying themselves, a crowd of troublemakers from the town surrounded the house. They began beating at the door and shouting to the old man, “Bring out the man who is staying with you so we can have sex with him.” 23 The old man stepped outside to talk to them. “No, my brothers, don’t do such an evil thing. For this man is a guest in my house, and such a thing would be shameful. 24 Here, take my virgin daughter and this man’s concubine. I will bring them out to you, and you can abuse them and do whatever you like. But don’t do such a shameful thing to this man.”

I would get off the raft and tread water. It shouldn't be too hard in salt water. After a while, another guy gets off the raft and treads water while I get on the raft or hold on for rest. We continue to rotate and take turns treading water. In fact, if 2 or more simply get in the water and hold on to the side, the raft will support everyone. This wouldn't work if the water was ice cold, though.
