I almost always vote for the image with greater DR because its more close to how our eyes see things and none of the consumer full size camera sensors on market today can match the human eye for DR as of yet from a single exposure that is. Cell phone cameras are even worse in this area because the sensor and lenses are so small so there may be some software magic going on behind the scenes. I would be very curious to know if the winners of these contests were in HDR mode! Or maybe they automatically shoot in HDR mode while others default to off. If so,, this is not a fair comparison. Or maybe they are all in HDR mode and then it comes down to which camera software algos does the better job blending the exposures.>> <<@jvnetsl says : Please do this in a "round-robin tournament". Like if you side loaded the google camera app to each phone and used the same app with each phone would it change the outcome. Wouldn't it be more interesting to also have a group phase before that? And, consider every match a best of three or five photos, where everyone votes for the best of multiple photos. Alternatively, consider mixing in a professionally taken photo with a professional camera, by an actual photography expert (that would cost you some money, likely, or a collaboration with another pro photography channel), and then have the people vote for which of three or five side-by-side photos they like best, given that they see a third picture of the same scene that they know that the professional took to the best of their ability. The pro should try to make the photo as normal as possible, so no excessive hard or soft lighting, exposure, editing, etc.; just take the photo as good as possible for what you'd expect from a smartphone: sharp scenes, bright but not oversaturated photos, HDR in the brights and darks, good sharpness and contrast in faces. You could even add bonus categories for picture modes that all phones left in the competition share, like maybe macro, portrait, ultra wide or telezoom modes, as the competition progresses. This keeps the competition interesting, and still the voting wouldn't be much harder. Only the organization of it, but that's your job. ;) Peace>> <<@MegaKiri11 says : Would be interesting to see how Xiaomi 12S Ultra would have done!>> <<@techboyl645 says : I think we would need to factor the shutter speed and responsiveness with pictures that are moving. While I understand that's a tougher thing to do an identical comparison between, I feel this is what most people look in their cameras if they actually get the shot of their pet, baby or generally people in movement. Probably that's where the extra $ phones factor better.>> <<@jullialog says : You should do a version of these just with iphones, to see which iphone camera is "the best">> <<@SLK_15 says : "Or would you rather have a camera that just gives you 9/10, 9, 9, 9, every single time" MKBHD, after the iPhone lost the blind camera test 4 years in a row.>> <<@NANOG-P8 says : so if a phone loses to another in 1 scenario they get eliminated ??? what if the eliminated phone smashes every other phone in every other scenario .>> <<@RandomRodeo says : All the Camera Tests are useless unless you do a Zoom Test & Night Photography Tests.>> <<@oleg5738 says : It would've been a lot more informative if you'd added a night photo and also video test>> <<@omnipitous says : Few comments: First of all pretty much everything said in the 11K like Twin Tetas thread (especially kylek29's comment) for better results. The bracket format is so heavily weighted by how you position the first round specifically lacking the season-long ranking that makes such bracket seeding work well in sporting tournaments. Second: You mention brightness in your wrap-up: That irks me so hard given without exception I've found all cell cameras I've ever used to take better shots when you slide the exposure down a bit. Enough so I've frequently pondered why the default setting is "too hot". Results and commentary like this make that make sense and mean I'm never going to get my wish. Thirdly: Commentary about "most people's" style taking phone pics. Yes, I want your average consumer to take the best possible photo with the least amount of effort AND one of my biggest targets is low TTC (Time-To-Capture) like Phone out of pocket -> Unlock -> Capture in a couple seconds so I don't want to be doing a ton of fiddling with every shot either.. Those casual shooters aren't who I'm looking at for "best camera" and I'm hoping you would put a bit more TLC into the shots being compared such as I noticed in many of the pairings the shot wasn't framed exactly the same. More or less window can change the lighting dynamics in the room OR the angle can significantly affect the image as well. Even people's expression in the photo: Psychologically people will tend to vote for smiles. Can't get a fair apples to apples vote on an apples to oranges shot. I would also hope the settings are roughly the same (Auto v Manual, HDR on/off, etc) Personally HDR is one of the first things I turn off on every camera I've owned because it's terrible for the high motion photography I'm taking most all of the time (concert photography). Heck let's be honest: Most people are taking selfies with their phones which isn't great for HDR either so why do phone makers default it to ON?? Incidentally I'm currently using a Moto Edge+ with the same 108MP sensor that's in the S21+. Although it zooms better than any phone camera I've ever had (3x optical, 10x digital but clear) in-general I think it's terrible compared to the 5yo Moto-X Pro it replaced. Video both the image and sound are significantly inferior and photos the color quality is absolute crap. Sometimes it's right sometimes it's unbelievably terrible and doesn't seem to matter whether in auto or manual or with the full spectrum of settings in manual. Maybe my sensor is defective? Maybe the software is buggy? Either way looking for a different brand for my next phone (and not just because the "Edge" concept is fscking terrible.. I want my non-screen edges back and unfortunately Motorola only puts their top specs in the Edge these days).>> <<@seinen18 says : Im curious, why would you put both google phones on the same spot instead of comparing those with the other brands? As you said, every camera has its own characteristics, some have different area of strength than others. So it'll be much fairer if users can choose every camera results from every scenario. And then incorporate some knockout system where every least rated smartphone will get eliminated from the competition.>>
