The Austenite Phase (High Temperature) At high temperatures, the material exists in the Austenite phase. This crystal structure is highly ordered, symmetric, and "rigid." This is the material's "parent" or "memorized" shape. Any configuration set here becomes the baseline the material will always try to return to. 2. Cooling to Twinned Martensite As the temperature drops below a critical point, the atoms rearrange into the Martensite phase. However, to avoid changing the overall external shape of the object during this transition, the crystals form a "twinned" structure. Self-Accommodation: The crystals tilt in alternating directions (like a zig-zag pattern) so that they cancel each other out on a macro scale. The piece of metal looks exactly the same to the naked eye, even though its internal structure has changed. 3. Deformation (Detwinning) When you apply stress to this cool, twinned martensite, it feels "soft" or plastic. Instead of breaking atomic bonds, the stress causes the "twins" to flip and align in a single direction. This is called detwinning. Macro Result: The material undergoes a large, visible deformation (often up to 8% strain). Residual Strain: When you let go, the material stays deformed because the detwinned martensite is stable at low temperatures. 4. Heating and Recovery This is where the "memory" happens. When you heat the material back above the transition temperature: The detwinned martensite becomes unstable. The atoms are forced back into the high-symmetry Austenite arrangement. Because there is only one way for the atoms to fit into the Austenite lattice, the material must physically move back into its original high-temperature shape to accommodate the shift.>> <<@Wolfgang-Albrecht says : Question: How effective are these mesh tyres in extreme muddy conditions?
