I’m British Ghanaian. I notice when I speak to other Africans especially Nigerians, they’re not interested in learning about my culture like my tribe or language but I learn about theirs. A Nigerian friend of mine loves Chinese food and her country food. But she has tried Ghanaian food like fufu with groundnut soup but I worry if I show her the food, she might not want it or like it because she’s exposed to Nigerian food which I understand. While my next comment is not an encouragement for Africans to continue to leave their countries on a dangerous and dehumanizing conditions many appear to endure in their quest to come to Europe or the US; but you are again off the mark to say no Africans have achieved material or professional success abroad. I know seeing our fellow Africans risk their lives through the dangerous journey they undertake to come to the West is a very emotional thing for all us to watch, but don’t underestimate the contributions those in the diaspora have made to the economy in various countries in terms of remittances. Just to cite a couple of examples, many African residents abroad were partly the reason why some of their siblings or family members were able to go to school with financial support they provided. There is no doubt that the real estate economic boom across the sub-Sahara region is partly made possible because of cash transfer and remittances they make. And many more have gone back to establish business, creating employment for the locals. This by no means endorses that people continue to undertake the treacherous journey many of them embark on. Many probably would not have had the same career opportunity they have had in the West had they not taken the risk. I think everyone should appreciate your comments about how we should have a different mind set and attitude about coming to the West, but your analysis is too simplistic to a very complicated societal and individualized problem. When people are desperate, they resort to all kinds of risk propositions. Ask many Asians , Caribbeans, Hispanic South American, and Eastern Europeans who have left their countries to pursue opportunities in the West. Let’s provide reasonable, empathetic, and compassionate analysis of what is really going on so people can really listen to you.
