I believe the Dante's three poems are about how hopelessly cut off from God we are. The only way to make it to God is to live a perfect life, which we can't. Only because of God's great love for us, he desired for us to be with him, sent his son as a man, to live the perfect life and die for our sins, which are impossible to pay off. Only because God loved us, not because we loved him, did he create the way to be with him.
