Overpopulation necessitates competition, and competition brings out the best and worst in people. Less competition results in slower advances (here in Japan, where I'm a permanent resident, depopulation has dramatically reduced competition in university admissions -now you just have to cover tuition and you can get in). But many "advances" like ubiquitous plastic are negative, and some, like resource wars, are the ultimate destructive force on the planet. Most "advances" don't filter down to the bottom, either: working meaningless jobs to make money to buy meaningless things isn't an advance. The problem we face now is not inadequate healthcare - we're reaching the biological limits of human aging - it's unequal distribution.>> <<@ichifish says : Permanent resident of Japan here and over the past 25 years I've seen a dramatic decline in interest in sex and marriage.
