The theist who makes claims about their gods must demonstrate them and therefore has the burden of proof. Skeptics have no burden of proof unless they make a positive assertion.

The person making the claim has the burden of proof Not sure why this is so hard If you claim there is a god the burden of proof is for you to prove that
>>
<<@manuaiipondraken8376
says :
As a Christian, we don't have the burden of proof and we don't have to, because we are not making any claim here. We only believe the claims made by the person of Jesus. So the he burden of proof lies upon Jesus. He is the one who made claims, that we believe in. And he proof his claim to us by his resurrection, that we have hope after death.

The question "who has the burden" seems pointless. Each of us make claims, each of us have free right to prove them, but that is not "burden", nor obligation. It is just a fun game, a hope for a lucky chance to convince someone by showing him our best reason(s) for why we believe or disbelieve.
>>
<<@Thundawich
says :
Considering in your example you ALSO made a claim, isn't it ALSO your burden to prove it? I mean essentially whats going on there is that there are two competing claims with neither party willing to defend theirs, both people in that equation aren't doing their job. No need to single out the skeptic.

<<@rydrakee57370

They defend it, don't they? That's why there's peer review and testing H0 in statistics. Christians can say something against it if they think it's wrong, but to this day there are still misconceptions about science floating around debunked countless of times, and if just on YouTube or Quora (as most have better things to do than reply to the same claim over and over again). (Examples: the the silly "you don't know if the individual of this fossil had children" to the famous "why are there still apes" argument or about Lucy and other species as if it was the only specimen found) These ultimately destroy trust in famous channels like (hovind for the first example) aig or genesis apologetics (here that latter example applies, see one of the recent videos of gutsick gibbon) On the other hand, you're making the claim that it's not that way so hypothetically you should defend it against their defense, no?

The concept of a monotheistic god is unfalsifiable by it's own rudimentary design. It is like contemplating about the contents of a box, that can never be opened .... and where it is utterly unclear if it is indeed a box to begin with. Asking for proof is a complete waste of time.

even in court cases, it's not a good idea to default to "i don't have to prove my innocence, you have to prove me guilty". when you don't present any evidence of your innocence (such as alibi) while the prosecutor keeps coming up with evidence (not proof) of your guilt, there's a good chance that you will lose the case even if you're innocent. also, this "innocent until proven guilty" is there to protect someone wrongly serving sentence. it is therefore an "unfair" rule. this unfair rule does not and should not apply to debates.

"There is no god"; "your god is a myth"; "your make believe skydaddy"; etc., these are all claims that the atheist/naturalist/skeptic try to deny they bear the onus to prove. They claim they do not need to prove these claims because a negative cannot be proven. However, though these are claims about a negative, they are positive claims about a supposed negative reality. All positive assertions bear an onus on the person(s) positing the assertions.

<<@Theo_Skeptomai

>>
<<@hamster4618
says :
Indeed, if you make the controversial claim of the existence of a god none of us have ever seen nor detected, for which is no evidence, make bold claims of zombies existing, virgins being pregnant etc, heck yeah, the ball is in your court to bring some evidence, some proof of your bold statement including threats.
>>
<<@hamster4618
says :
The Christian makes the claim of the existence of a god and then of their âGodâ in particular when itâs clear their is ZERO evidence for that claim. Now I donât give a damn about your beliefs, and if you want to pray before eating, or if you want to sing in church. You may believe what you want. You neednât prove anything. We are simply having a conversation and I may ask for your evidence just like you may ask for mine. HOWEVER, if you want to push your unfounded, unsubstantiated beliefs onto me, trying to limit my freedoms, heck yeah, you will have to PROVE the existence of your god. And no, asserting a god is NOT EVIDENCE!

Unless they are just ignorant atheists, atheists who understand their own position are normally not making any claim about the existence of God but challenging the veracity of the evidence of the theist claim. The onus is therefore upon theists because they are claiming God exists and the burden is on them. I am a theist and it appears to me that Koukl is just trying to find a way to move the goalposts.

You have the claim so you have the burdon. As an atheist, i have no burdon because i simply do not velieve you or your claim. So bring evidence and stop trying to shift the burdon of proof.

<<@nothingbutthetruth613

Is he for real? This is the epitome of irony. He is right that the burden of proof is on atheists when it comes to religion in general. But when it comes to Christianity and the other religion which was the only monotheistic belief system that existed 2000 years and for millennia before that, they think the burden of proof is not on them. What?? Hello. Where is the evidence and proof that Christianity changed the bible? Where is the evidence that the status quo that was in place for 1300 years before Jesus which originated with Mount Sinai and the giving of the bible, was abolished? Where is the evidence that everything being done up until Jesus was not needed anymore? The burden of proof showing every single doctrine in Christianity is true, is completely on the Christian to prove....and they can't prove anything. Nothing in the nt has anything to back it up.

Common sense is better than claim
>>
<<@Gek1177
says :
The burden of proof is traditionally on the person making the positive claim. That's why the burden of proof is on Christians with regards to God and the Bible. It could be said that an atheist who claims there is no God has the burden of proof to prove their is no God. Contrary to popular belief it is possible to prove a negative but with that said most Atheists would probably concede that a God may exist but that it's existence has not met the burden of proof and they therefore do not believe God exists.

Every time a skeptic, atheist, or unbeliever make the silly claim âGod doesnât existsâ I simply ask them for the proof of their position, it comes down to evading their burden of proof or emotional rhetoric, proving that they have no good reason to deny Godâs existence.

Who has the burden of truth? What sides do. If you canât prove your point and still think he won because the other side didnât prove their point, youâre a fool. Every atheist Iâve ever had this debate with always says that the Christian is one that has the burden of proof. To supply evidence. Yep no matter how much evidence you provide for them, and even proof if you have it, they deny absolutely everything. Completely ignore it or deny it. Yet every time Iâve asked them for any kind of proof to back up their side, not once. Not one shred of evidence. Is there a proof along with that obviously. Absolutely nothing ever. Yet they still think theyâre correct.
