I agree with much of your criticism. But as a matter of fact the Wikipedia page you showed to prove that Elon invested only 5%, that page actually shows that he invested about 38% in the beginning. So, as much as I hate to admit, it’s fair for him to say that he is the reason OpenAI exists. See this section from the Wikipedia page: “$1 billion in total was pledged by Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Elon Musk, Reid Hoffman, Jessica Livingston, Peter Thiel, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Infosys, and YC Research.[12][13] The actual collected total amount of contributions was only $130 million until 2019.[9]” The key is to realize that “pledge” means nothing. Actual investment is everything. Assuming that Elon, did invest $50M (as he claims) of the $130M, and assuming that his story about Ilya accepting the offer to join and then backing out only to be persuaded again, Elon may have had a substantial contribution to at least starting openAI.
