Jesus did tell them to buy swords for reason of self defence. If you read the next verse it says why.>> <<@alexburla1973 says : Well, this is (or near to) a perfect response>> <<@ChuckyD says : As a youth one day walking home from school, a young man approached me and asked if I was a Christian and I responded, “yes.” Confidently raising his hand toward my face he said, “Well the bible says if someone slaps you on your right cheek I must turn to him also the left.” I very quickly thought about this impending conflict and then responded, “The bible also says. ‘Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight.’ Before you decide to slap me you might want to consider which scripture I might be thinking about.” He slowly turned away and I don’t remember encountering him again after that.>> <<@solaar11 says : Thank you!! So many churches misreading or mis-using this verse>> <<@elbertsorrell8394 says : Frank gave a great answer here. Many who take a Pacifist position un Christianity today, I am not sure adequately deal with Jesus' statement to His disciples to buy a sword. Or when He asks if they have one & they tell Him they have two & He tells them it is enough. He did not tell them to get rid of them!>> <<@toodreammy says : Street Fighter thumbnail threw me off LOL>> <<@AtamMardes says : Jesus said "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth", and he also said "Turn the other cheek.". So, which is it?>> <<@davidross5593 says : Just like miyagi do karate. It is self defense karate. Only engage when there is no choice and is inevitable>> <<@TheSonOfGodWorshipsTheFather says : Vengeance belongs to who?>> <<@sheldonberg125 says : I think that is wrong. Franks response is not justified biblically.>> <<@amandamccallum6796 says : A lot of people quote Jesus telling his disciple to sheath his sword to not defend yourself too and I respond that he doesn't tell him to get rid of the sword. You absolutely can defend yourself and others from evil.>> <<@mikaelsvartdahl says : If you refere to the scripture of Jesus saying to his disciples to buy a sword, you also have to include the scripture where he instructs his disciples not to use it. Matthew 25:52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Jesus came riding into Jerusalem on a donkey. He is a king in an upside down kingdom where we serve, we do not dominate.>> <<@mikaelsvartdahl says : By being beaten, ridiculed, shamed and killed on a cross Jesus showd, in practice, how we are to defeat darkness. By exposing the cruelty of human nature. Being a christian is being an imitator of Christ. The first generations of christians were willing to be eaten alive by lions without fighting back. In letters written by martyrs they were thankful for being given the opertunity to suffer and serve God by sacrificing their life. This created so much cognitive dissonance in the Roman culture that they came face to face with their own brutality. What used to feel good, slaughtering people screaming for their lives, did not feel good when the christians stood there strong in their belief dying without a word. Turning the other cheek. Absoorbing hate. I would argue is at the CORE of christianity.>> <<@ColinFox says : I have a real question for you who consider yourselves to be REAL Christians: Why call yourselves christians if you're just going to ignore the things Jesus says? He says you can't defend yourself. You are supposed to self-mutilate rather than shoplifting or looking at porn - cut off a hand or gouge out an eye. A rich man cannot enter heaven (can't worship both god and money)- you're supposed to sell everything and give the money away. Love thy enemy. Turn the other cheek. You do NONE of these things. You are TERRIBLE christians. Now, I don't care. I'm an atheist and I don't know you, so I'm just saying this for your benefit. Why call yourselves Christians and then not do the thing that makes you a Christian? It's like me CALLING myself a jogger, but never jogging. Or owning a gym membership, but never going. You CAN do it, but you are incurring a cost (membership fees for gym, tithes and personal guilt for church), for what benefit? Why call yourselves a christian if you're not going to ACTUALLY follow Jesus? The ONLY people I see today in the US even TRYING to actually follow jesus are monks & nuns.>> <<@ColinFox says : Lol - it means exactly what it says. Jesus says repeatedly that your body doesn't matter. You are supposed to GOUGE OUT AN EYE if you can't stop looking at porn, and he REINFORCES that with "It is better for you to have only one eye and live forever than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell." You expose yourselves as the false christians you are by twisting Jesus' words to mean what you want them to mean. I leave you with Matthew 7:21-23: 22 On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name? ' 23 And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness. ' You are literally anti-christ.>> <<@e.m.8094 says : I've always thought that Jesus was saying we shouldn't be trying to "get even" with someone.>> <<@ShackieChan says : Then all the discipline disciples were executed.>> <<@jax408 says : Amen>> <<@dawnp5498 says : Beautifully said and it makes so much sense now being explained that way. Thank you for this and God bless you😃>> <<@DaveElectric says : His advice for this young lad is BS. "Stand up for yourself" makes sense on the school playground but when you get into the adult world your ability to survive is almost entirely a function of you tolerating injustice and turning the other cheek. The real world is relentlessly unjust and unequal. Christ and Tolstoy understand the sociological reality of the adult world. You have no choice but to turn the other cheek. Otherwise, you just get slaughtered like Spartucus.>> <<@nerdvona3 says : As a young man myself, I think many young men these days absolutely need to be physically fit, practice a martial art, and learn how to handle a gun. But they should always be the last line of defense. If you're in a store and someone starts shooting random people, and you have a concealed firearm on you. If I was in that situation, I would be an absolute coward not to use it. I think it would actually be considered love in a sense to end that threat. These people who are going about their lives and suddenly they're getting their life ended by evil. If I have the ability to stop that evil (even if that means killing) I'm going to absolutely do so out of the love of those other people. That's very different than if someone pushes you or insults you. Obviously almost all of those situations can be avoided, but there are edge cases like active shooters.>> <<@D3xterJettster says : Jesus would support the 2nd Amendment>> <<@AyRookie says : I appreciate the SF6 thumbnail. Game looks good. Haha.>> <<@phoenixanimations5233 says : Read whole quote you hypocrite.... it is not only about insult.>> <<@ronniebozeman5059 says : Excellent Answer>> <<@shawnangel8146 says : Nowadays Jesus would say: "If you don't got a gun go get you one" đŸŽ¶" I hope you gotch yoself a gunđŸŽ¶>> <<@johnx140 says : This is a lie and a form of control. Corrupt Christians and everyone else that is evil pushing this idea to weaken Christians.>> <<@jacktoneoluoch8959 says : Frank "why do you ask that?" was what caught my curiosity. That question was very key in understanding why the young man needed to defend himself.>> <<@McDoubleFunny says : I love the Street Fighter thumbnail. Whoever runs this page clearly knows how to grab the youngster attention lol>> <<@overhaul1531 says : This reminds me of a saying from the movie thor where it says a wise king does not go looking for war but must always be ready for it however yeah i like what he says if you see that conflict is avoidable avoid it and run away from it but if it isnt then yeah its okay to defend yourself HOWEVER i also realized something while watching this when jesus was being persecuted and i think it was peter who sliced the ear of a soldier jesus says put down yours sword for wheoever kills with the sword will die by the sword so when it comes to defending yourself i think that yes defend yourself bur do not kill the person simply have mercy lets say yes punch back but if they retreat let them retreat and do not persue or give chase with the intention of killing. Thats why if i have kids, i would get them classes of yudo, which is a form of self-defense that revolves all around immobilizing your opponents rather than punching or kicking>> <<@r_lonef says : He is wrong about the sword thought. Later when one of apostles showed literal sword Jesus said to stop it or something like that. The sword is a word of God therefore bible>> <<@chrislenz6634 says : Violence is not in the actions, it is in the heart, the peaceful heart comes from knowing and loving Jesus. I always loved the show Kung Fu: Young Caine: Master how may I walk a peaceful path when the world is seldom peaceful? Master Po: Peace lies not in the world, Grasshopper, but in the man who walks the path. Young Caine: But in my path may be men not filled with peace. Master Po: Then seek a different path. Young Caine: And if at each turn appear those who would be violent and do not love peace? Master Po: To reach perfection, a man must develop equally compassion and wisdom. Young Caine: But master, how do I not contend with the man that would contend with me? Master Po: In a heart that is one with nature (Jesus), though the body contends, there is no violence. And in the heart that is not one with nature (Jesus), though the body be at rest, there is always violence. Be, therefore, like the prow of a boat, it cleaves the water yet it leaves in its wake water unbroken. Seek Jesus, even when under attack, He will lead you to victory, even if you lose the fight.>> <<@edgarmorales4476 says : Because we draw our LIFE and BEING from God, we draw our capacity to think and love from God. Even as God is creative, so are we creative. With our minds and hearts we actually form the plans of our own lives and experiences. And what kind of lives do most people plan and form in their minds? If someone annoys or hurts them, they retaliate in some way or another, they believe that if their eye is taken, they must expect their adversary's eye in return. They believe that whoever kills should be killed as punishment and compensation, they believe that whoever robs them should pay the price, that whoever steals their wife, should be stoned along with their wife. Most people believe in the extraction of payment for every evil thing that comes their way. Since it is human nature to hurt others, and most people have been taught to retaliate, their lives are a continual scene of warfare - warfare in the home among husbands, wives, children, neighbors, public figures and between nations. God knows nothing of this warfare in their lives, but knows the stress in their minds and bodies arising from this warfare but can do nothing - nothing to ease the pain - until they themselves stop the warfare. They themselves must cease their fighting and live in peace with their families, neighbors, employers, public figures and other countries. Only then, can God's LOVE WORK take place in their minds, hearts, bodies and lives. Only then will they be able to recognize and see the Love Work being done in them - and for them by God.>> <<@LetsgoB says : Stand your ground!>> <<@Mrad..20 says : Exodus 22:2-3 is also good for this scenario>> <<@1angelicdemon1 says : You know I wish I was taught this lesson when I was a kid>> <<@potapotapotapotapotapota says : The perfect example of all this in play is the way they hit Jesus, stole his clothes, stabbed a thorny crown into His head, whipped Him raw, then nailed Him to a cross and let him slowly suffocate to death - all because He told them they were sinners and that they needed to repent. And yet, Jesus still loved them despite all they did to Him. But there will come a time when Jesus will judge the world. There is a time and a place for everything under Heaven, even violence. But wisdom knows the difference of when to use it or not.>> <<@ivorito says : US have defense force, they are trained to protect, you can do that too as a Christian>> <<@TheLionFarm says : Yet what is martyrdom of the martyrs>> <<@randyp0514 says : I agree but I think "if it's unavoidable" is too strict. When would it be unavoidable? When you are kidnapped? Met in an alley with no way out? Very few circumstances. I think running from conflict as a primary way is also not best. Verbal is not brought up and is important to deescalation. Then there are bullies and abusers who need to be met with force. I'm sure you could run from them but that shows weakness and encourages their behavior.>> <<@thatonerandomdude7268 says : Love the thumbnail!>> <<@danielanthony8373 says : I don't remember Jesus saying buy a sword but I maybe mistaken... Jesus was so loving and compassionate and wise and powerful that the thought of using force against another human being didn't enter his consciousness He was tortured and murdered by the most powerful Empire to exist at that time and yet 300 years later the Roman Empire converted from Pagan Gods to Christ The Roman Empire is long since gone So who had the Power ???>> <<@mjmcc- says : Great answer! 👍>> <<@piijay14 says : So stop telling us to turn the other cheek!>> <<@francmittelo6731 says : You MUST turn the other cheek. When the soldier came to arrest Jesus Christ, he did NOT defend himself. A disciple chopped off one of the soldier's ear, and Jesus Christ healed it. So, it is pretty OBVIOUS that "self-defense" is NOT a Biblical reason to not turn the other cheek. There is NO valid and reliable "context" to disregard this command. It is a direct command from Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ himself was an example of this command So, do you want to be more like Jesus Christ or you would rather choose the life of the flesh (self-defense)? Tough decision. LOL>> <<@memastarful says : Aaaww God bless this young man.>> <<@KingNazaru says : Good to know self defense is permitted.>> <<@atunaisatakau1428 says : Understanding biblical context goes a long way and helps answer questions when verses are picked out like that. The whole of Mathew chapter 5 was Jesus’s interpretation of the Mosaic Law to the Jewish crowd present at the time, He was not addressing the Church because the church had not existed then, it was still future He had not gone to the cross yet. The reason for the sermon on the mount was in contrast to what the Pharisees were teaching with their traditions being overwhelmingly burdensome on the people. In the Law it stated a tooth for a tooth an eye for an eye, judicially the punishment must fit the crime. As for turn the other cheek it’s not speaking of self defence in any way, rather it’s about personal retaliation and seeking vendetta or revenge, It is not God’s way. In those days a slap on the cheek was rather a disgraceful act and one would in most cases look to defend their honour in a duel or seek revenge in some form. The misinterpretation of verses like this has left many believers cornered feeling guilty for something that is read into the passage. Hope this helps. God bless.>> <<@nhermawan says : What a great explanation. Makes so much sense>>
