Don't give yourself a leeway to satisfy its desire for pity and wishful fairness. Ironically, don't love yourself. You may felt hopeless, anxious, pity, and defeated that you develop a foolish belief of your self-selving worthiness. You don't need that mindset. Famished your desire for self-love, seek not your foolish need for space, hide not from other's scrutiny, exhaust all your pride preservation and expose that thought and feeling that make you depressed. I tell you, don't let depression cave you in. Cause the deeper your are falling and drowning into its nothingness, the harder it is for you to swim out of its surface and breathe the relief of not being haunted. It is because not because you give in depression, but you give in to the devices of yourself.>> <<@timothythomas8082 says : It all starts in the home. Half of the playgrounds around where I grew up are on the verge of abandonment, because it isn't safe for children of any age to be there. That's got to make you less resistant psychologically, because you don't get to exercise away as much stress. Most parents today don't have the choice of whether or not the mother stays home. Most families require both parents to work just to scrape by. People move clear across the massive country for work, often states away from friends and family. That eliminates free babysitting. So, children in general are inside more than other generations. They don't have safe places physically and psychologically. Children in the United States still kill themselves over being bullied. Not only is there physical and psychological bullying, social media makes the problem more widespread and perverse. There's a huge correlation between youths who can handle online bullying versus those that hide it and suffer based upon the number of hours they have on unsupervised devices. Back when I substitute taught, high school students would make bullying snap chats and share it with a full class of students just when someone snuck into the bathroom. Never used it, but I think Snapchat was the online platform where videos would expire after a certain amount of time. So, good luck proving what was in it. A student showed me part of the video when it happened, and then it immediately disappeared. And, people wonder why some schools lock up phones. What happens to one student effects others vicariously as well. I think that's another problem with youth today. On some level, we are all effected by what happens to those close to us. After a TedTalk, I bought a book from Harvard authors that I eventually gave away when the statistical side was too complex to absorb. Nonetheless, I still learned something from what I did read. The book was called "Connected: The Surprising Power of Our Social Networks and How They Shape Our Lives" by James H. Fowler and Nicholas Christakis. For someone that can actually read and understand the work, I could see it applying to this situation. But, you don't even need to read it to see a casual connection. Before I dropped my education minor, I remember talk about clusters of entire school populations having various psychological and physical problems that occurred more at some schools than others. Schools where a few students were having elementary students who were sexually active suddenly had large clusters of this. One school where a student started cutting and then showing friends instead of adults to get help, suddenly dozens of kids became cutters. A school hours away from my college had a high school student commit suicide, and then a handful of others did the same. Then, suddenly that school had the entire school in group therapy sessions on a regular basis that I think went on a few years to recover. There's a bigger need for kids in therapy now too. But, I think it is even worse for boys. Some places in the US have so many kids and teens entering psych wards that kids are on waiting lists or wait in ERs for days. All around, what is happening kids today never happened before on the scale that it is. And, with less women at home and more families torn apart - that affects entire communities because they don't have as many places for children to go as before.>> <<@tristan7216 says : Jonathan Haidt described one cause, the universal imprisonment of middle class US children in the name of safety starting in the 1990s, due to fear of kidnapping. Aided by the rise of exurbs where kids can't go anywhere without being driven by their parents because no sidewalks and things being so far apart. Kids learn to think and negotiate when they're unsupervised outdoors. Drugging kids for restlessness in class probably doesn't help. The rise of really terrible educational methodologies, like whole language reading and "common core math" that my engineer friends with kids can't even figure out, and which this impede learning, probably doesn't either.>> <<@chs9999 says : No you idiot people are depressed because they either have some sort of psychological issue to be worked out through therapy or some sort of chemical imbalance within the brain that occurred by random chance>> <<@LisaGiesler says : Endocrine disrupters. Look at lead for example, we have ‘unleaded’ fuel now, for a very long time people were exposed to it and had high levels of lead in their blood. The generation that was exposed to this correlates to lower cognitive function, critical thinking and increased impulsive behaviour. There was many side effects associated and it is affecting a generation still alive today. Lead is an easy example but oh boy, you don’t want me to get started on Teflon. By his logic, ‘chemicals’ hasn’t done him and his generation any favours too. So perhaps we can rule that out, and draw another line somewhere else.>> <<@kristianrasmussen7521 says : The climate folks have been trying to get their point across for decades, through papers, info adds and so on.
