The legitimate spiritual awakening that the Gnostics were striving for and often achieved goes beyond the words they wrote because such experience is beyond all categories of thought. Unfortunately, words were all they had to describe this amazing spiritual awakening that is now referred to as *non dual awareness* It is a state of mind as far removed Peterson and Lindsey as the planets. Since reading the Gnostic text and even the Bible can be easily misunderstood even by those with good intentions, anyone can end up saying something stupid like Lindsey did. The Gnostic text and even the mystics throughout history from all the spiritual traditions were respectively misunderstood and therefore persecuted because they did not toe the orthodox line. The Gnostics and mystics were the legitimate Christians but Peterson and Lindsey would care less about it. A true spiritual awakening will always be misunderstood by those who have never experienced it. This is why Christianly has so many interpretations each claiming that they have the true interpretation when in reality NOBODY does because they have turned their mis-interpretations of the Bible into objects of idolatry. You would think that Peterson would be outraged by this because he knows all too well the dangers of ideologies, like Christian Nationalism taking place RIGHT NOW. Then again, Peterson will opportunistically keep mum about it because he does not have the courage Dietrich Bonhoeffer did when the latter warned his fellow Germans of the dangers of Nazism. In the past 4 years, a coalition of Peterson's fellow psychiatrists have taken on Bonhoeffer's courage by writing 4 books on the danger Trump poses yet Peterson has said nothing about it and to believe Peterson knows nothing about these books is hard to believe. To make matters worse, by ignoring the dire warnings written in these books, to regard them as a difference that makes no difference, would be no different than being like the Germans who ignored Bonhoeffer's dire warnings. And speaking of warnings, here is another one by Alan Watts on how we unwittingly end up turning our misinterpretations of the Bible into objects of idolatry. *_“The problem with our ecclesiastical goings-on is that we run a talking shop. We pray, we tell God what to do or give Him advice, as if He did not know. We read the Scriptures. Jesus said, "You search the Scriptures daily, for in them you think you have life." Nobody can reasonably confuse a wooden image with God, but you can very easily confuse a set of ideas with God, because concepts are more rarefied and abstract. This endless talking and preaching in church does nothing, by and large, but excite a sense of anxiety and guilt. You cannot love out of that. No scolding or rational demonstration of the right way to behave is going to inspire people with love.
