When someone encounters a bigot, they are being treated differently solely on the basis that they believe something different than the bigot. It’s all about what someone believes. If anyone of ANY religion (or for another reason) treats a person differently because they either believe or don’t believe something, they are acting as a bigot. If you don’t allow someone to drink grape juice because they don’t believe as a Christian, you are behaving as a bigot. If you don’t allow a homosexual (not actively) to be the pastor of a church, you are acting as a bigot. Do not equate believing something with doing something. It is not harmful to believe that stealing is a good and fun thing to do. It is, however, harmful to steal. Treating someone differently because of their actions, rather than their beliefs, is not bigotry. People don’t enjoy being labeled as a bigot. If you are acting as a bigot by definition, the cognitive dissonance you experience will be overwhelming. You will rationalize it any way you can. Usually this is done by trying to justify a situation where it is OK and seemingly unavoidable to be a bigot. It seems justifiable to not allow people to participate in certain things because they don’t believe as you do. You might feel justified, but you are still acting as a bigot. Examples of rationalizing bigotry might follow this comment.
