This is known as using logical fallacies, a very poor form of logical argument that should be the least persuasive due to its extreme tendencies to be utter nonsense or Chutzpah (completely made up bold false claims). I feel that Tom in his reasoning incorrectly assumes that there is a sort of supported truth wins paradigm underlying community discourse. That is, he assumes that the truth will prevail if argued correctly. However, unfortunately research ash shown that at least of the level of groups and teams there is also a fault wins paradigm, where a bias is so powerful or a group is so biased, that even just one person referring to the bias sways the group in the wrong direction. I agree with Sam Harris that it can be dangerous to let everyone just say whatever they want, because for certain topics, and definitely on certain platform, there seems to be a societal fault wins paradigm, rather than a truth wins paradigm. This probably has to do with many different forces, some of which are political, but some of which just seems to be an insufficient level of intelligence and motivated reasoning of a large part of the population.
