Good, balanced approach to the idea of affirmations. I had a friend who was getting counseling, during which her counselor encouraged her to practice saying "I am worthy" to herself in the mirror (which she found hard to do). To me, it also seemed a little bit off; it made me think "What makes someone worthy?" and "Worthy of what?". Looking at the Bible, too, while I did find exhortations to "walk worthy", I couldn't quite find anything supporting this statement. Rather, a biblical approach would seem to lead us to believe that we are, in fact, worthy of judgement. But, that is the beauty of the Gospel: nothing we have is because we are worthy of it, but because we are loved. In the end, I encouraged my friend to try not practicing saying "I am worthy" but rather "I am loved." But yeah, I think what you said is important that not all affirmations are wrong or bad, but we need to be diligent that we make sure they are founded in Scripture.

If you are speaking Truth ie who God says you are as His Child, to get your thoughts in alignment with Truth and to not be agreeing with the enemy that is a good thing. The Truth will set you free and that includes in the most fundamental area of us - our identity. We need to be real about areas we need to address in ourselves, AND address them, absolutely. And knowing what the Creator of the universe thinks of you is very significant in dealing with the lies that life has taught you. He came to heal the brokenhearted. Truth heals the lies you've been believing 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Priests of the ever-changing cult of psYchobabble, are the main promoters of these heretical beliefs. Priests of the ever-changing cult of psYchobabble, want to be seen as Guru's of sage on the mountaintops of wisdom. Self love, self esteem, self promotion, self confidence, self forgiveness, self help, self actualization, self this, self that - are all hallmarks of Satan. "Mental health" is an anti-Biblical industry & a fallacy. One has spiritual health, or they don't. One has physical health, or they don't. A brain-caused problem, is physical. A spiritual-caused problem, is spiritual. There are no dYsfunctions, dYsorders, sYndromes, or etc that the priests of the cult of psYchobabble hasn't made-up to look like Greek by using the letter Y where the letter I belongs, & therefore look like it's scientific. There is sin, & there is righteousness. Brain diseases, injuries, defects, & etc - are physical & result in varied actions by the sufferers of the various physical maladies; they're not "mental".

There's nothing wrong with saying positive affirmations. If you have negative core beliefs about yourself you can rewire your brain to have positive beliefs about yourself. However, doing it without Christ is idolatry. Knowing who you are in Christ is perfectly healthy trying to lift yourself up and leave God out of the equation is not

This can be a tricky subject, because many people may have come from a background full of “worm theology” where your church leaders constantly tried to beat everyone down by constantly reminding everyone how much of a evil, unworthy, disgusting sinner you all are. To overcome this spiritual abuse, you need to remind yourself that you are a child of the king, and that when your father looks at you he sees the righteousness of Jesus; God is not disappointed that you are a weak, frail, flesh and blood creature made of dust. He knows what you are, but he valued you enough to send his son to die for you, so your soul is indeed of infinite worth to a loving God. On the other hand, you are right in that people use affirmations to simply ignore their sins, and use it as an excuse not to work upon themselves. Sanctification is the duty of all believers, and it is all too easy to live in denial of our own shortcomings. I’m certainly not perfect, but God loved me enough that he sent his son to die for me, so obviously my Heavenly Father thinks that I am valuable no matter what people might say about me. I’m certainly not better than anyone else, not even the vilest sinner, but I also know that I am not inferior to anyone else, for even the greatest saint in the Bible was a sinner saved by Grace just like me. So the key is balance. “Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking about yourself less.” ~ C.S. Lewis

We are not just moist robots that become worm food. We Are Spiritual Beings with a soul. Being an empath (I don't know what the Christian term would be) I have had a lot of strange incidents happen to me. However this past Saturday night January 8th in the evening I experienced something new. At first it caught me off-guard and even scared me a little bit because I've never had it happen before but I had an idea what it could be. Folks there are different dimensions and there is a spiritual realm around us 24 hours a day 7 days a week that you need to be aware of. Where is your spirit going to spend eternity after this life? Atheist cannot dismiss the hundreds of thousands of spiritual and supernatural experiences that people have.

Holly crap. You all really believe you can’t say anything good about yourself because God wants you to believe you’re nothing so you can love him? Like I’m not allowed to tell myself daily that I’m smart or I’m a kind person without having to say because God did it. This is really sad. I honestly thought we’d be in a better place with this by now. When i was a pastor i always pointed to 2 Peter (i believe) where peter says you’re a royal priesthood, a chosen race, and we can be proud of who we are because of who god is. But none of that entails also remind ourselves that we’re nothing without god. Might as well not affirm yourself if you’re gonna say “I’m sh*t without god”

I tried affirmations and they felt false and, like you say, insustainable. On the other hand, my almost 30 yr old daughter feels like she doesn't fit in with the typical younger age college students. I told her to tell herself that she had the right to be there just as much as them, she paid her tuition, she's there to learn just like everyone else (in reality, probably more so), and to own it. I speak like this to myself all the time.

If the basis of the affirmation comes from Christ, it builds you up. But if the basis of the affirmation comes from your self, it puffs you up. Basis from self: I am valuable. Basis from Christ: I am wretched—but Christ has made me valuable. Christ-like affirmation glorifies God. False affirmation glorifies the human self. I think the Scripture that says we’re fragile clay jars holding the treasure of Christ puts things in right perspective.

Affirmations are a tool that can be used well or poorly. I suppose it could lead to self-delusion but help you align your "worldly flesh" with the desired actions and values in your heart. When I pray for God to help me align my actions with the fruits of the spirit, I might go through a multi-step process: (1)I'll pray (2)Read applicable scripture (3)Mentally project how I could lovingly engage with others today (4)I'll use affirmations to prepare my mind to live out love. For example, "I sincerely greet (person) with warm hospitality today." Or "I will lovingly connect with (person) on (the issue they're struggling with)." Affirmations are a tool to align my desired actions in my heart with my selfish flesh which may not be as kind as I would like. "When I say things about myself I don't actually believe are true, but when I say it enough that I attract it to change my way of thinking, I think this is unrealistic and flawed." It's less helpful to merely state your opinion about something. Sharing factual evidence, science, or biblical scripture is more helpful to support your point. Positive affirmations don't mean you only believe good things will happen. They're about proclaiming the behaviors and mindset you hope to live out. Affirmations are about aligning your worldly flesh with your desire in your heart to live out God's work. Romans 15:13: "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." Applying negatively charged labels like "sorcery" are less helpful than calling it a "mental tool." "Sorcery" is a triggering word for many (especially Christian) evoking fear or desire to avoid a potentially helpful tool without truly understanding the tool. @Mellisa Dogherty is "dumping the baby out with the bathwater." You're not going to be an expert with every "tool" out there. Pray, find, and evaluate the tools that work for you in your spiritual journey.

"Leaders" among many American "churches". Most of the "churches" in America are nothing more than places to go get motivational talks. The Word of God has been so misrepresented that it's no wonder that church attendance has been waning as this wicked [worldly] philosophy has increased. Most people in "churches" today don't have a fear of God, they have no idea that they need a savior (they are told they are all right just as they are, and don't need to change) or that they are called to be separated from the world. No, most "churches" aren't churches at all.
