Is there a way to use an RPi to search/query data on itself over a microphone? E.g., you have a database with sections of law and want to ask what section of law pertains to a type of crime. Or maybe a law dictionary that gives you legal definitions...

Will it support other languages? I am trying to help my elderly mom, who speaks Ukrainian/Russian. I tried to have her speak into a Windows PC in Russian to transcribe this text and then translate it to English. Is there a tool for this? For some reason, Windows does not support Russian speech recognition. Yes, offline is a Big plus.

That voice synthesizer was, quite honestly, surprisingly bad. Even Stephen Hawking's voice synthesizer was better and more natural sounding than that, and that was from, what, the 1980s? even earlier?

AI is a bit loud word for this mostly procedural processing of everything. The only place where something resemble AI is speech recognition and speech synthesis, but it's more precise to call it neural network powered. As for microphones, any mic which will work with Linux PulseAudio will do the job. I don't know why these guys are limiting the choice. And with open source projects like Mozilla DeepSpeech and Coqui.AI (TTS and STT) you can do both voice recognition and voice synthesis completely offline. I don't know why these Mycroft guys didn't take this option, it's quite easy to setup and use

nice video and all ... but it seems that i completely fail to understand what's so amazing about these stupid "AI" things ... the way i see it, all these talking soda cans ... any alexa, siri, cortana and their knockoffs ... is nothing more than a talking "i'll-google-everything-for-you-because-you-are-too-lazy-to-do-it-yourself" machine "what's the wheather tomorrow?" "how high is this or that mountain?" "turn the lights on!" where exactly is the "intelligence" in that ... ? ... and it even is more time consuming to talk a piece of tech into giving you information or doing something for you instead of just doing it yourself to begin with ... like setting a timer or an alarm ... i grab my phone ... swish and flick ... and the alarm is set ... in just under two seconds and without a single word spoken and tranmitted to any server ... so the "assistant" part of this also falls flat ...

(Besides I am using keyboard and keyboard shortcuts, right now ... which are always faster to use, but have to be learned like bicycle riding, than ... how was this called? ... ah, talking! :) )

Well done Chris, I didn't know you were able to do that with a Pi but as thing progress it's good to know it's available if you would like to take on a project like this. The Pi you are using in the video is the same one I have The Raspberry Pi 4 with 4GB RAM. I'll give it a go and see what happens. I'll have to purchase the microphone, but being its inexpensive shouldn't be a problem. Thanks again for a great project and stay well. As always, "Enjoy The Adventure". Oh to mention I have just posted a video on my Y/T channel Richard Palmanteer if you are interested.
