I've started a lot of things in my life out of love and ended up feeling overly attached to my identity as a lover of said things. It's funny cause if we let life flow, things are always changing. But during change, we go through moments when we're not attached to anything. We've let go of the old and the new hasn't come yet, and so we're in this state of unrelatedness that humans these days are so terrified of, I think because it doesn't agree with the current state of the world. But the choice happens subconsciously. If we go against it, it will indeed only cause us pain. Having said that, sometimes our situation makes it hard to escape from things, or, sometimes, keep things. Recently I stumbled upon Viktor Frankl's theory of value (meaning). He noted our attitude towards things we cannot change as one of the core human values, the other two being creativity (creating utility) and experience (the present moment). I wish to you and everyone here to find value even in things we cannot change, and create at least a little bit of value in someone else's life.
