Is there a way that could work actually? Regarding the "machine gun" - it is quicker, but far weaker than polybolos, and slower at reload (not to mention less movable) than chu-ko-nu. Imagine crafting all these magazines by hand, and then putting all these precious arrows/bolts in, and risking that when this weapon dysfunctions or gets destroyed, the ammo can’t just be picked up and used by another soldier when instead you could use the materials to arm a lot more soldiers who are agile too and can actually take cover from incoming projectiles This goes hand in hand with the fact, that better weapons not automatically make soldiers more efficient.
