The parallel between polygamous lifestyle versus homosexual lifestyle is a good comparison. But I also thinks that this example is also excellent in terms of defining what should be acceptable based on natural laws of human existence. No matter how creative we humans are at creating and inventing things, we are still bound by the laws of creations wether we like it or not. And this is also what gives people the basis for rejecting homosexuality, the fact that it goes against the law of nature itself. The natural law which states that human are social animals, and therefore we form and build relationships. But in terms of romance and intimacy as in we know what, that is reserved for just a man and a woman. And this is strongly supported and backed up by the law of re-production. The mere fact that the constitution of marriage in itself in basically every culture has no meaning if no children are ever born. In some cultures, a married couple are not even respected untill they have a bouncing new born baby to show to people as a evidence of their union, aka the proof of the marriage! So, it is clear that this is a common notion in all cultures that a man and woman unites in that intimate sense for the purpose of re-production as far as the social environment is concerned. So, when a man and a man, or a woman and a woman cannot provide the society this evidence of productivenes of a child, then it is against the natural law of intimate union. We can apply this principle towards polygamous and monogamous families aswell. Again, in terms presenting the society a bouncing new born baby; how many men and women are needed for that?. So, if it only takes one man and one woman to provide the social community a new member, why then the need for polygamy?. You mentioned that issues such as jealousy is something that was non existent in pre-colonial eras. I would have to disagree with this, because even in the bible you are familiar with, this is a topic presented as a problematic family situation. Just Jacob, the fatherhead of Israel and the Hebrew nation had two wives. Rachel the love of his life and Leah the other wife. Leah being completely unloved, having to beg Jacob to spend the night with her, even trading her son's possession for a night with Jacob etc. The same with the household Samuel was born in, his mother the heart's desire and then the other wife and her children!. It is clear that we as humans, men or women alike were not created to be in love, the real true love of blood for blood love with more than one person. When people live in the same house or share compounds like the majority of African communities were structured throught many civilizations, the problem of envy and rivalry will arise. This will depend on feelings and needs. And also the perception of what is wanted out of life for oneself and ones children. For instance if the women in this marriage do not know the intimate aspects of marriage, such as that things such as attention, petting, princess treatment and sacrifices for them are supposed to be offered by husband. But he is just a material provider, then the likelihood of strong jealously is none. Because so long as each wife has her own small cottage with her children, everybody have food, clothes etc, all her needs as a wife are met according to her notion of marriage. But if she perceive that she is entitled and deserving of attention, special treatment and intimate hours with her husband. Believe me you, she is not going to be happy about him be spending time in other wives cottages!. This will go into the element of romance and being in love as we know it in our modern day. If a wife or all of them are just in it for the communal function, they don't think anything of the husband beyond provider and the father of their children, there is not going to be a problem at all. In fact if I was just handed over by my family in marriage to a man I do not like, let alone love. And there are other wives there, I think I would be happy to have them around in the sense of not having to deal with his demands and needs, if he is not happy with the little I want to invest and give, well just run over to her cottage Mr! Basically!. Such as King Solomon in the bible, whose political ambitions lead to 700 wives and 300concubines. Wives having private and independent palaces, villas etc in different cities even. Nobody interacting with nobody, even Solomon never seen again after wedding day by many. What problem can possibly arise in this kind of polygamy?. But when you actually spend time, days and life seasons together, then we have a real polygamous family and issues can arise. Let's also make clear that after King Solomon achieved all his polical ambitons and got tired of adding the daughters of fellow kings, governors etc to his wives antique collection, Mr Casanova finally fell in love. The book of Song of Songs is just about that, Mr Solomon in love. All his attention, thoughts, plans and everything is directed at this Shulamite woman, as if there are no 1000womem already under his name! The only woman who ever mattered to Solomon when it came to love, the matter of the heart, was this Shulamite woman, none of the other 1000!. And in terms of fairness, how fair is it that a man can have many wives, but a woman cannot have many husbands? Would you as a man be content with sharing house/compound with other men sharing a wife? Seeing her breastfeeding other men's children etc? Lol, if you will shed some fellas blood, what makes you think a woman should be okay with you having other wives?. Not to mention the conflicts which arise based on lifestyles etc. Which wives among the 4-8 who would be happy to see that her rivals's children gets educated and not hers because husband cannot afford all children's school fees?. Yeah, polygamy can work when all parties involved are in it by free choice, knowing exactly what they are getting themselves into.
