Not everyone has the spare money for fancy materials nor fancy tools. I can't speak for the rest of the world, but here in Canada, shipping pallets are always available for free and even advertised on websites that list local "used" goods for sale. Some businesses love to have people come take them away. And you can actually get some very beautiful wood grains and even hardwoods from some of them! Awesome little handful, that! The board looked like Oriented Strand Board- or OSB; this was a subfloor sort of thing to build floors on top of with pretty large capacity.
