There are a few utilities and programs not available on Linux but only about a handful. I'll keep windows on my main desktop pc (also need it for my job) but have installed Linux on a laptop. So far with success and I avoid the annoyances of windows (constant notifications, pushing to buy stuff, onedrive hijacking my folders etc etc etc). I've installed programs with Wine 7, and if I need it I have a VM of windows 10. I started that up after 3 weeks just to let it update. And since the beginning of the Pandemic I've used this PC for gaming. I had the time, so I solved that problem for myself. Where I often struggle is when it comes to dual and especially multi boot (e.g. Windows 10, Linux Mint, Manjaro, etc.) and therefore to bootloaders. Let's give you two examples: Usually, the last operating system installed will be the one that boots first and whose bootloader is (first) loaded when starting the computer. Unfortunately, Manjaro won't start from the Linux Mint bootloader. So, it would be important to install Manjaro as the last operating system. However, when using Timeshift in Linux Mint, it will change the boot order in the UEFI (I guess), so Manjaro won't be startable without restoring the boot order to the previous state in the UEFI. Therefore, I am thinking about getting rid of Manjaro. I don't use it too frequently anyhow. So how can I install the Linux Mint Bootloader over the Manjaro one, so that I can safely delete Manjaro from my drive and give Mint more space instead? There are of course many other possible scenarios! These are just two examples to give you an idea of the possible problems that might occur. Maybe, this would make a great video: - Partitioning drives - Creating a multi-boot (automatic installation of the bootloader by the last installed system) - Changing bootloader afterwards (when deleting an operating system) - Changing the boot order in UEFI/BIOS from an operating system (instead of from the UEFI/BIOS menu, if possible). Perhaps this might also be of interest to others. I like your calm, sympathetic and mostly humorous way of explaining things clearly.
