He has even stated “I make music for myself, I am very selfish in that sense” and that is the reason we don’t have another album. I don’t even consider Mez/Hyp to be true SOAD albums, I consider them Daron’s narcissism manifested into his inability to take fame as humbly as his other band members. How insulting is it to bring fully completed demos to your band members and tell them “this is exactly how I want it” without their input or creativity? That isn’t typically how the creative process works for a quartet band, and didn’t ever with SOAD. Daron to this day still doesn’t know what “wake up grab a brush of make-up” on Chop Suey! means, and that is part of the beauty that made them stand out! Not to mention John’s absolute MASTERCLASS of drumming on Chop Suey, actual unprecedented creativity…. Suddenly Daron controls how the drums sound? What about Shavo’s riff on Toxicity- an absolute highlight of their entire discography… but now Daron makes the riff because his demo is complete? Daron claims that band “naturally transitioned” and “evolved” into him writing most of the music… that isn’t an evolution or progress though, that is hogging the creativity because he wants his vision uncompromised. Mez & Hyp should have been a single album, instead they are a bloated X% Serj songs and X% Daron songs double album… I would really like to hear about what John & Shavo contributed on Mez/Hyp too. Serj always praises Daron for becoming a “better lyricist overtime” we see that on masterclass tracks such as She’s Like Heroin (god what a horseshit of a song) but honestly, his lyrical song writing skills are sub-par at best, albeit he is an amazing instrumentalist- but he should really learn his place and have his ego struck down, he is not a lyricist by any means, and should stick to back up vocals. He absolutely cannot sing by any regard either, but there is no harm from him trying now and then, he does have a charm to him. Mez and Hyp do have bangers like BYOB- “marching forward hypocritic and hypnotic computers”, and then “dancing in the desert sun shine” - truly the perfect blend of SOAD that seamlessly works, similar to songs like Prison Song (utilizing drugs to pay for secret wars / buy my crack in Hollywood). Even Cigaro is catchy, but I can’t help but wonder if Serj saved the song from being literally about Daron’s dick to much deeper systemic issue… but then we get tracks about Daron’s childhood friends Danny & Lisa… like okay? He wrote a song about his experience at a Celebrity Baseball game… like… uh okay? Were all of SOAD there or just you? Why couldn’t Daron’s celebrity baseball memory be delegated to a sidenote bar or two like I-E-A-I-A-I-O when John met Hasselhoff? Why did SOAD suddenly start getting an ego of experience in songwriting when tracks like Forest, Science, Suite Pee and Chop Suey! Exist? Why do songs like Hypnotize go from “kids in Tinnamin Square” to “I’m just sitting in my car”. Wow such lyrical prowess, must have had a creative stroke of genius when writing that one. “The most loneliest day of my life" really hits close to home when you start pushing your band members away. By 2006 they were truly shells of their former selves, and the fanbase had a clear divide. I was there in the early days, at those shows, in those mosh pits- they went from strong provocative statements like “pushing little children with fully automatics” to vapid uninspired ego-driven blandness about drugs and fame. They simply just got too big. Some people were at those shows because they supported music that had a message to apply social pressure to change political injustices, and others were the ones that wanted to hold up their lighters at a concert and film with early era flip phones- that is exactly who Mez/Hyp are for. I’m not saying either or is right or wrong, I’m just saying that I am disappointed they were one of the few, if not the only bands that were willing to risk it all to send a message but then sold out. I once watched Daron nail 50+ Guitars to a wall to give his studio a “certain sound” you get from testing a guitar in a guitar shop. Guitars without strings or knobs… just nailed to the wall… so god damn lame. I’m not even saying these millionaire dads can even make another masterpiece like Toxicity anymore, but over the years SOAD has become less secretive about their songs & meanings, and it really shows they had a defined writing process that Daron ruined because he got greedy and selfish. There is absolutely no excuse or justification for Daron’s bullshit.
