it's almost dystopian feeling that we regard having children now as almost a terrible act against humanity, as if we should be ashamed and reject the idea of bringing more lives into existence, i understand the argument against having children, it implies that basically we should allow ourselves to go extinct, is that really the answer? can we think outside the box and find alternative futures where things are brighter or more palatable, that makes having children desirable? im sure we can come up with solutions if we try

The expected standard of living, and associated cost, has risen significantly. 50 years ago, the “single income” middle class was a small, 2-3 bedroom home, 1 car, no cell/cable/internet/streaming, no fitness memberships, meals prepared at home. Today people expect to move straight into 5-bed 3500ft2 home, 2 near-luxury or EV cars, $300/month in infotainment expense, doordash cooking, etc, then looking ahead to the costs of suburban “elite” sports programs, private schooling, to build resumes for college costing a home mortgage, and it’s forever away. The ratio of consuming to producing has inverted.

For the first time in history, Opportunity Everywhere is being Limited. Best example; Medical schools. There are WAY more than enough 'qualified' people to be doctors....but if there are 5 seats and you're the 6th person with grades just as good as 1 thru 5, but dont have the connections; you're out. Full stop. If your parents didnt give money to the school or didnt go there (legacy admissions), you can forget about it. Parents giving money to schools is like the legalized bribery called lobbying that takes place in politics.

GOOD jobs are extremely rare and if you loose a good job you are either unemployed a VERY long time (and maybe have to take a mcjob to survive at home), or move far far away. The thing is even the good jobs don't pay THAT much, certainly not enough for someone to stay home and raise kids. There are people that are so profoundly skilled and intelligent that a business cant loose them but those people are extremely rare

Wow. That explains why so many large industrial companies (auto, parcel delivery, aerospace) are paying a base wage (plus overtime) of over $100k per year. With benefits it's in the $140k range. In regards to the future of labor, the labor curve is dead in the water on the long end and labor is extremely scarce. Which is why companies are like "Well, let's just pay these guys now because there's nothing in the future in terms of labor supply". Unfortunately there are many people, both men and women, who have mentally clocked out after witnessing what happened over 50 years, and 2008 still has a scar on many people. And labor force participation rate among working aged men in America is at historic lows.

We have got to the stage where corruption is both top-down and bottom-up, pretty much all over the world. There are few pockets where people are still trying to be morally upright and they’re genuinely good to their families and neighbours. But people underestimate the impact of financial institutions on our ability to function healthily. The construct of interest and credit based societies and inflation which is used as a tool to control us are not normal or natural and shouldn’t be treated as such.

What a bunch of pathetic comments. Too many people have this victim mentality nowadays. There are many high paying careers out there if you get the education that is required. Where people suffer is in mid-level jobs, and those have dwindled because we want cheap products, which is what causes jobs to be moved overseas. Reducing overseas production increases inflation. Pick your poison. Life was never easy.
