Putin was prime minister under the previous president because one can only run for two consecutive terms. His term was finished. While he was a prime minister, he suggested six years per term for a president. After serving as prime minister, he ran for the presidential election, which he won. During his term, the constitution was changed from 4 years to 6 years. That means the current term at the time was nullified, so he will start serving six years from the date the law was passed as his first term as president.
