The interesting part was what happened next. Almost every customer would immediately take out their cash and start counting, as if their brain had accepted the number. Then, after a few seconds, they would suddenly stop and ask: “Wait… how much did you say?” Only then would I give them the actual total. I watched this happen again and again for years. What fascinated me was that 70 and 700 seemed particularly effective. I experimented with other numbers to see whether the same thing would happen, but they didn’t seem to produce the same reaction.
