I held her by the back of the neck and jogged with her until....I quietly let go and she didn't even realize. She went about 50 yards until she realized she was on her own. That was it! She understood and learned how to ride right then and there. Took a few days to get used to turning around and stopping but she did it first try without crashing. The gyroscopic effect of the wheels does play a role, but more importantly the caster and head angle are set in such a way that when the bike leans, the front wheel naturally falls into the direction of the turn. However this is also heavily dependent on speed, and different front end geometry is required for different speeds. Most normal mountain bikes are stable from 5-20mph, while downhill bikes, motos, and the like are optimized for significantly higher speeds and are typically unstable at lower speeds. On the other hand, having enough wheel speed does also help to keep the bike heading in the same direction and gives more stability because the inertia of the wheels will have a tendency to damp oscillations that can be triggered by uneven surfaces or speed-geometry mismatch.>> <<@waynenocton says : The gyro effect can be seen easily on a motorcycle, just ride straight, then push the handlebar to the left, and the bike will tilt right causing a right hand turn.
