I finally left Windows after some years of experimenting with Mint. I currently use Mint 22.3 however also looking at the latest Ubuntu. Because of the nature of Mint (Ubuntu) I'm wondering what you prefer at the end, Mint or Ubuntu and what makes that choice?

Hi! I have a problem booting from a ubs disk. I had ubuntu 24.04 on a usb and installed it on an external ssd drive. Since then I have deleted it from my ssd drive but in my "grub" I get this message when I want to boot from a new ubs stick: "Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else, TAB lists possible device or file completions Anywhere else TAB list possible device or file cmpletions. To enable less(1)-like paging, set pager=1" In bios the Boot Priorty is: Ububtu (Samsung MZVL4512HBLU-00BTW) It is the same as Windows Boot Manager. What do I have to do to get this fixed? Thanks for your reply.

Ubuntu forces Snaps on users. The server side of Snaps is closed-source and held by Canonical. This may or may not be important for you, depending on your thoughts on FOSS. Personally, I'd like the server side to be open sourced, for the sake of competition and to inspect for telemetry. Canonical are in danger of just becoming another Microsoft - with all the bad behaviour that that entails.

One year after this video, and I am watching this in a live run of Ubuntu 24.04.3 on my gaming computer (Ryzen 7 5700X/3070Ti/16 GB 3200 MHz DDR4), which is running Windows 10 with that ESU thing (and which will have to get that awful Windows 11 next hear, I guess). Everything seems to work just fine (although moving windows is a bit laggy - even with a 3070Ti). I am waiting for an SSD to arrive, to install Ubuntu on, after which I will be running Ubuntu alongside Windows 10 (Ubuntu for "general computing" due to Windows' privacy problems, and Windows for gaming-only). I really "got going" with Linux back in 2007 with Ubuntu 7.10 (later 10.04), but switched to Linux Mint when that Tux-awful Unity (Gnome 3) came out (glad to see that Gnome 3 is a bit more user-friendly). I have several computers, which are running various distros (from Fedora and Manjaro over LMDE and OpenSUSE to Bunsenlabs). It's good to see that Ubuntu is still an excellent distro.

Great review. I have just migrated to Ubuntu from Win11. I have an MSI Katana with rtx 4070 and everything just works, I love it so far. Gaming also works well so far using proton . Before Ubuntu I have tried Mint and Bluefin. I had hardware issues on both and I am a beginner so I didn't even tried to fix it. I did check other reviews about linux distros and many trashed it but it is a good option for someone like me because I just want something that works out of the box.

I keep an old 16.04 computer for doing a lot of letter writing and using a printer that I have hooked up to it. I am using 22.04 on another computer that I use for browsing. I am 72 years old and I am not going to learn how to use a new word processor or how to hook up a printer in 22.04 so I still use my 16.04 for those important jobs. If Firefox did not turn it's updates off I would still be using my 16.04 for doing everything. I do NOT need any new computer updates but I am forced into learning 22.04 and I hate it more than I have ever hated anything else in my whole life before.

I have tried to give ubuntu a chance so many times and every time I attempt it the thing breaks in one way or another within a week. I have tried it like 4 times and usually I have bugs related to the repositories but the last time I tried Ubuntu it bricked my computer simply by changing the cursor theme with Gnome tweaks. I couldn't even get past the login screen and because of that I couldn't access the terminal at all to even attempt to find out what went wrong. I straight up had to re-install the entire operating system. I had issues like these on both my Lenovo thinkpad t480s and the Asus ROG Zephyrus M16 (2022). In my experience it is the absolute worst distribution I have ever used in my 5 and a half years using linux. If you want a reliable distribution and you are new to linux I would recommend simply installing Linux Mint instead. Mint is far more stable and reliable than Ubuntu could ever hope to be. My distro-hopping days are done though and I have since found my Linux "home" distro in Endeavour OS.
