As for the parliament voting for the president instead of direct elections by the people: we have had both systems in Slovakia since our independence in 1993. Both have positives and negatives but nither is really outright bad and the other good. Voting directly for the president gives more power to the people, but from past experience where the parliament majority was won by one side of the political spectrum and the president from the opposition does creat greater division in the country as we have had many instances where the president excersised his veto to legislation past by the parliament majority creating a constitutional crisis where nothing is getting done and instead everyone is acusing the other side of the resulting mess. So direct voting for both, the parliament and the president is a more complex system with many variables, but if the “fighting” is done in parliament and the courts with words an not weapons, than it is in my opinion a more just and democratic system. But having only parliament elections and a president vote in the parliament with a one term of 6 years does not sound as a bad system.
