Not only do they reward xp and skill points, some reward you with new weapons and outfits. I understand your reticence of upgrading your greens, but you should at least upgrade your go to weapons. Also, when the game asks you if you are ready, that is a clue to visit your stash and craft any items you are low on, and then replenish your currently allowed to carry stock. Then return totally equipped. And I so wish there was a "get lost" button for your mount. I have stumbled onto too many encounters that while I can hide myself, the locals seem to have the ability to ferret out my mount and beat it to death.
