iPhones had reverse wireless charging hardware for years. I think the only time it is on is when you have their batter pack on and the phone is plugged in and both the phone and pack charge.

This is not a penny pinching thing, this is hoping in the future they can enable a feature that they never said would happen and boom. Apple just made something old new again and it costs the millions to do so.

They also do the opposite. In early butterfly keyboard Laptops they added a connector on the board which a technician can connect to the logic board and do data recovery. They then took out the connector from the logic board but its marks to solder the connector is still there which means you can technically still connect to it but you have to know how to solder right. Removing it though, made it go beyond the services they could offer at an apple Genius Bar as they do not do soldering work. removing this essentially removed data back up capabilities as they continued to push iCloud.

It’s a way they future proof their devices. For the amount you’re paying it’s good to know certain features can be utilized without having to pay for a whole new device. As long as it’s not google or meta using your devices parts to spy, I’m chill
