It can also be things like white noise, fans, A/C etc. that diminish my ability to hear voices clearly. This also means focus on tasks can be tough as my brain is switching and listening to other sounds rather than ignoring them, e.g. doing a tax return and hearing a documentary in a different room breaks my focus.
