According to an article published by the BBC in February 2025, the Russians tried an orbital mirror called Znamya 2 attached to a Progress supply vehicle on February 3, 1993. The mirror created a beam about as bright as a full Moon which whizzed across Europe at 5 miles per second. The night was cloudy, but even so, a few people on the ground saw a flash of light. A larger 25 meter diameter Znamya 2.5 was launched but botched commands tangled the mirror foil on an antenna and the project didn’t work. If Znamya 2.5 had worked, the beam might have been up to ten times as bright as the moon. The Russians scrapped any further Znamya work as too impractical and expensive.

Starship will eventually make it to orbit, there’s no technical barriers stopping it. Those were test flights that were suborbital by design. Starship is much heavier and has reusable boosters making it way more advanced than SaturnV. It will reach orbit with 100-150tons of payload in 2026.

Is it that hard to do your research? "The moon doesnt power solar banks": yes because the moon surface Bond albedo is only about 0.11 (≈11% of incoming sunlight reflected). High-grade silver mirrors on the other hand: about 96–98% reflectivity. "The LEO is to close to earth": you are right and that is what the company wants: ~30 Minutes of additional Sunlight before an after dawn Take a 1-GW solar farm in the desert near Abu Dhabi as an example: Extra power = 1,000 MW × 0.1(sun) × 0.5 h ≈ 50 MWh per day Over a year: 50 MWh × 365(days) ≈ 18,250 MWh = 18 GWh That is: 26,500 Barrels of oil saved / year / solar farm 900,000$ made / year / solar farm

I would say geostationary orbit would be a better position, and instead of falt reflectors they should be parabolic to effectively focus the light and not spread it out, however without doing any calculations i would guess it would probably be cheaper to build a solar farm with batteries and use the stored energy at night instead of sending mirrors in to space.

Regardless of how the math on reflecting light from orbit works out, even my math and physics challenged brain can tell in an instant that its easier and cheaper to just build twice as many solar panels on the ground than launch many many satellites into space to maybe double the time that said solar panels are effective.
