I am a subject matter expert and am great at my job! I am now at a point that I just feel absolutely stuck and unfulfilled! I have so much more to offer. I work in the financial services industry. What advice can You give me? Thanks>> <<@abigaillooney9198 says : Thank you for this. Helped me a ton in my new job. But what about people struggling to even get a new job. It took me 7 months to get my own job. I feel that is not okay, what about these people stuck in the overloaded, crippled by too many options and lack of educational leading programs to help people understand how to find a legit job in this scammed filled, third party/unknown employer, understanding the jobs, what you qualify for, how to work with the digital system, and I can go on. But you are only working on having us teach ourselves these very complicated things. Yes, that has saved me but it took me 7 months and without the support i had going through learning curve. I would be still be in a minimum wage job with no future. This digital era is exciting but sufficating. Thank you if not for your videos and my support system i would not be were i am at. Never operate beyond the pay grade Never work for free Disclaimers : with the exceptions of applicable merit or charitable situations Now that skill set ableist mentality is ridiculous every job deserves a living wage. I rarely hear so much that's not accurate or blatantly privileged without true perspective - no generational wealth, no college accessible without crippling debt in any field. I listened closely to the majority of the quality interviews the secret is that the most successful had a friend or family let them live rent free with board while they skill develop or the mentor lit the path and cut a 20yr journey to 10yrs..>> <<@jamesrussell8583 says : Here I sit, along a road, which I haven't a clue, Blue is snawing on a bone, it's midnight, I just shiftedy truck to park. Followed advice just like this. Really cared about company and gave his input into things he was not hired for. They used him and then worked him out of the company as quickly as possible. It rubbed up the managers up the wrong way. He was a smart guy, had a lot more experience than his managers and could execute his tasks really fast. He helped anyone that asked - even drew up training manuals which were used time and again for trainees. He called me in a state saying they made him redundant - he was bitter because he cared so much and gave his all. My advice to him was "that's not your father's company. Shut up and do what they pay you for and go home." That advice served him well because he's calmer, less stressed and no one is threatened by him at his new job.>> <<@FIVESTRZ says : 23:55 man that was a gut shot and I love it>> <<@vicky1717able says : what's the name of the book he recommended I couldn't catch it>> <<@imu6085 says : Thanks a lot Tom for the tips. Want to share my experience to add couple of different aspects. i worked in europe/UK and asia (approx a decade in each, different cultures, and not the same set of behaviors is helpful. some common learnings: 1. your boss is an important person. if he's good for your career, stay. Else leave after you have learned the skills from that group. in some organizations, and depending on your soft skills, it is possible to bypass a boss, and network with other seniors. that can also be done with care if your boss is not helping ur career. 2. try to find what is that your boss and other people in power (those who can promote you) are trying to achieve (it may not be always problem solving!), and where you can help them achieve that thing. it may be difficult sometimes, as they may not tell you directly or it can differ from your views on things. also take care that you jumping in solving a problem should not upset your boss/seniors, as they may not want you to take the credit, or they may see you as a future threat. this is not the norm, but it surely happens sometimes. Be aware of the company culture and the power dynamics in the organization (and its not the same what you can read from org structure!). 3. there are also roles where growth is not possible, however hard you try. Either because the seniors have already picked their favorite for that role (and its not easy to know that), or other reasons in that organization. it's better to learn and move in such cases. 4. taking risk of 'doing it wrong' is unavoidable i belive. but learn from others (and internet) and try to minimize that risk. take calculated risks. practice when possible for tough conversations. 5. after some time, technical skills become less valuable than people management skills. i guess this is true for most orgs. 6. some people will have the advantage of having learned from someone in family about corporate culture and other useful soft skills. others e.g. who had no family member gone to college etc, will have to learn more. 7. there are many people like you, competing for same stuff, and eventually 'career' is not the topmost thing in life. (@Matt B has put it appropriately). try to help others along the way, dont step on others, and try that others dont step on you. its great if you can derive a meaning from your work, else you may use your work to support an activity that gives some meaning/fulfilment in life. (else work becomes dull and burden) 8. understand your industry, plan a future and work towards it. keep your skills reasonably updated for your industry, so that you remain marketable. i hope some of above is helpful for some people. wish you a good day!>> <<@geraldinecolvin8662 says : Backwards Cap Guy.>> <<@joramcastle says : hello Tom! what kind of webcam are you using? it looks cool.>> <<@azhaanebrahim4887 says : Words can't express how much I appreciate you work and this YouTube channel the tips and advice and you give how to change my life around I'm getting better everyday even just a little bit the way you do everything the way do anything sometimes you have opportunities right in front of but we don't have the humility and to developed the skills execution to get the job done there is opportunity everywhere if you just look for it👍🏼>> <<@ralfy5270 says : OMG TOM! such a good breakdown of passion! I went from a tier 1 school to a tier 3 school where I sat Alevel. I got bad grades at a level as well and I failed to progress to university. I did a diploma in law thereafter but because of all regrets and worry,I didn't do well and got a pass diploma which still wasn't enough for me to advance to university. This has haunted me to date! I regret a lot because I know I could have done better but because of so many problems and misfortunes in my life I failed! Unfortunately people judge the results without knowing the story behind it! I'm now 28 years old and still hurting with regret! Currently I work with a law office as a clerk. Some people think I'm a lawyer, yet I'm not,and that also worries me a lot. I have wanted to go back to school, but I'm currently financially unstable. How can I overcome this pain of failures and obstacles? How can I turn my life around?>> <<@bikecameraaction3334 says : Take it from me (with 40 years work experience), if you’re just looking out for yourself (promotion, more money, better title), and you’re always trying to outperform others, you’ll always be miserable. Whatever your job. The only way to be happy (at work or otherwise) is to stop looking for status and validation from your work. Let go of this ridiculous idea of success (which is only ever comparative) and focus on helping other people live better lives. That’s it. That’s the secret to life-long happiness and contentment. Whatever you have - time, energy, love, give it away and you’ll have an abundance more to give.>> <<@Lazarusrizing says : Man, this resonated with me. Thank you. I recently left my job of many years and it was initially a terrifying to do. While I miss the folks, I still don't think I did the wrong thing. I have peace about leaving. I'm working something that pays more now while trying to set out for that particular goal I have. For me, it was like a nagging conscience. I loved the people I worked with. I really wanted to go above and beyond. But I was unhappy. I was praying and turning to God to help me to know what to do. When you have comfort and you're familiar with everything, but you're sensing that you want to-- or need to leave it behind. Again, it's terrifying. I need to say that I couldn't do it without God. Thanks Tom for this really practical explanation-- especially about burn out which I was experiencing. You made me less guilty for wanting to take time off to rest.>> <<@visualpurposedriven8725 says : Great work>>
